As long as it is same company, it is counted. By all accounts, I consider myself retained too.
After I went beyond the call of duty to retrieve passport for my boss, and made coffee for seniors, the firm has appointed me as a personal Butler.
I guess having a an outstanding part b results help too.

Is being a legal exec in a big4 really better than being a lawyer in a smaller firm?
As to the guy that say you should write directly to the partner, not sure if this advice is trustworthy. This can easily backfire and lead to a sting to your name. There is a HR or recruitment website for a reason...
