I think because Cavenagh was a Singapore entity created by CC for the purpose of litigation in Singapore, perhaps Gibson has more of a pure international arbitration focus (no litigation there)
And since he's reknowned for his international arbi work rather than court liti, that may be one of the reasons for the move rather than pure reputation/prestige

Signing TC in final year is uncommon but not rare these days, especially since covid. Heard of people who find TC during Part B. If you don't mind firm quality and you just want a TC for the sake of it, you'll have no problem getting one

Also, these days, you don't just consign yourself to your TC firm for your entire life
The legal industry is quite dynamic and fluid, so people do move to different firms after their TCs or after a couple/few years of being an associate (sometimes even changing practices) so it's not the be-all-and-end-all

The tentacles of the opposition are more entrenched than you realise.
Singapore's educational institutions and establishment insiders, are playing both sides.
These insiders cannot defect to the other side openly, so they are subtly hinting to the opposition what positions to take for their subsequent maneuvers.
Tommy Koh himself is partaking in these so-called divisive racial politics.
These insiders may not "tear relentlessly at fault lines" like the extreme ones, but they do... tear subtly and perniciously at fault lines.

I've been seeing posts about firms paying more for the 1 year tc scheme. 2k for the first six mths, and about 3-4k for the last 6 mths. Is this true? I got my tc last year but my tc stated 2k/mth for the whole 12mths.

It's gonna be much harder, this is to cater to people who fail and need to retake... So they don't have to wait another whole year to qualify.
