I think the fundamental problem with law is that singapore is simply not legalistic enough. To generate more jobs, court should award higher damages. We must encourage more civil suits. Then there will be incentive for people to use legal services, and lawyers employability will improve.

We must be wiling to resort to legal means and court process, instead of settling problems out of court.

Yes and legalize contingency fees. Will make litigation much more exciting

third party funding in arbitration is already permitted in a limited scope.

litigation funding will be the next wave.

old timers who talk of champerty and maintenance are pushing against the tide and should go back to using typewriters instead of emails

I have a friend who is being paid ALOT in an international firm.. things are so unfair. He got in because of his grades and moots but I dont think those are a fair indication of work ability. Firms should be more open to accepting people with less-than-stellar grades but with relevant experience and good interview performance.

Err.... You do know intl firms dont have the luxury of time to "test" everyone who wishes to apply? And we get flooded with so many application we dont have time to call every single one for interviews.

You want to get in, work for it. Get your grades. Do your moots. Work ability can (to an extent) be trained.

Agree. I went to a small firm that specialized in a certain area of law. Pay was bad (think 3k or less), but the experience was good and I later managed to jump to an in-house role (MNC). Life is pretty good now, as is pay.

You know. This isn't bad at all - at least it's based on merit. What really pisses me off is when absolutely mediocre people get into top tier local firms because of connections. Some of it is so blatant you can't help but imagine the "wtf jackie chan" meme in your head.
