Now I graduated from smu jd course I feel quite sad for my peers.

many did not secure a training contract.
and even those who did either quit half way or
they are just pathetically paid or even not being paid at all.

In the end some just went to work in jobs that a general degree holder can easily do

my view is that law is becoming a poor investment

There is not much time left for family n personal too being a law student.
Most weekends and weekdays are burnt till late mornings esp when there are cases to study and work to be done.

Could any law undergraduate or graduate verify if this is true for law students?

Thank you.

Hi everyone, I'm a 2nd year poly student with below average grades. However I do harbour the ambition of becoming a lawyer. I am lucky enough to possess the means to go overseas and study. Does anyone know which overseas university has a law school recognised by the law society in Singapore and is not too difficult to get into? Much thanks.

Basically which school would be easy to enter, can get First Class easily and then get a good firm to hire me.

I know firms likes first class grads and i heard u.k. uni are easy to get first class.

Looks like a troll post, but just in case it isn't - even the scheduled UK unis won't accept a poor poly cert. Those that did are no longer on the schedule since 2015.

All is not lost though, you can either try to enter a UK uni by spending a year doing a foundation course, or you can try your luck with an Australian uni. Good luck finding a job with an Australian LLB though.

So I wonder if anyone here has had similar experiences, and regretted their decision to read Law? If anyone would offer statistics on the kinds of first jobs Law students from NUS and SMU take up upon graduation, that would be great.

What's the issue with Aus degrees? Seems like plenty of white-shoe firms and MC firms alike are staffed with Aus grads..

Nothing wrong with Australian degrees per se, but the perception of employers (i.e. Singapore law practices) is everything.

The general perception of Aussie law degrees in Singapore is not favourable at all. MinLaw did Aussie grads no favours in 2015 by delisting 8 of 19 UK universities on "quality control" grounds yet increasing the number of scheduled Australian law schools, including certain institutions with LLBs not worth the paper they are printed on. It is no secret that we were arm-twisted into doing this as part of a certain FTA. The SG authorities didn't push-back too hard as they knew full well that the private sector would still of course filter out these graduates, but not before allowing the hapless (and often less academically able) students to spend colossal sums of money to graduate from such institutions before realising that nobody will hire them, even if their degree is from a "scheduled" university.

The top 3 or so Australian universities are still properly decent and can rival that of some UK universities. But how many employers will take the time to educate themselves on these matters? With the glut of SG/UK graduates, they don't even have a need to do so.

That said, you are right that many international firms do actually hire Australian graduates. But even without the bias often shown by Singapore firms, you are at best on equal footing with about 5,000 applicants from other SG/UK etc law schools trying to get in. What do you think are your chances?

I am fortunate to have been offered to do a law degree at either SMU or NUS. However, looking at the recent news about the pay cuts for Lawyers due to the weak economy, as well as the oversupply of Lawyers in the job market, I am wondering if it is still a good choice to pursue law. Personally, while I do have interest in the law, I feel that practical concerns are equally important and would like to know if this path still has a good future.

Besides that, I have a few questions: 1) SMU or NUS LAW? My impression is that One of them has a stronger focus on corporate law. Do employers prefer nus over SMU graduates because of brand recognition?

2) What about Yale NUS? Arguably I have a stronger interest and would have more fun pursuing liberal arts. But the fear of a worthless degree (in the employers eyes) is strong.
