Unfortunately, family law, much like crim law, is seen as a "lower" (less prestigious) form of law. There's no benefit to being exposed to contested or uncontested divorce cases because most litigation firms believe (rightly) that the type of work performed in a civil matter is different from civil family law situations.

If you want to leave family law, do it as soon as possible so that you do not become too expensive to train. Once you hit past a certain level, you're screwed as you're too expensive to train.

Tonnes of red flags. People posted about their terrible interview experience on this forum some time back - I’m sure a Google search will get you there.

Also, there’s a reason why they’ve been hiring for some time. It’s because no one wants to join.

Don’t bother.

Agreed. Had a friend who interviewed there. I was told it was a terrible experience.

Can someone kindly comment on the difficulty and pass rate of part b? How many pass on first try? Is it harder than part a? If you don’t pass on first try, how will it affect retention and your future career?

Failing one paper is very common, failing more than 1 is a red flag. In any case, part B allows you to retake immediately (Part B exam is late nov-dec, Part B reexam is in March). The pass rate after retest is 99%.

Therefore, if you mean how many pass on first try (without retests), that's actually quite low (50-60%?). If you're asking how many pass after retest, don't be afraid because only the worst of the worst can fail and be forced to retake part B the following year.

Retention really isn't decided by whether or not you failed a paper, but if you're already borderline on the accept/reject pile for retention (I think most people know if they are), then that might be the push either way.

What are the salaries for associates with 4-6 PQE and senior associates like?

is this based on PQE? or is there a industry standard % of billable hours? is the salary 250k if say you bill a couple of million dollars as a senior associate etc.

Assocs with 4-6 PQE and senior assocs -> which firms? small and b4 have very different dynamics. For big firms you technically have a variable bonus component but it's rarely based on your billable hours. For small firm you might get a cut dependng on the firm.

Default JLC and academia

Hi, could anyone share more recent info about JLC and Sheridan Fellowship/Asst Prof/academia in general? Specifically:

JLC

- Starting salary

- Typical career paths after the programme ends (hearsay a lot of ex-JLCs join private practice? Any benefits going the JLC -> practice route as opposed to getting the extra PQE?)

- Is JLC the best path to take for those aspiring to (eventually) become judges?

Academia

- NUS Sheridan Fellow starting salary

- Assistant Professor salary and expected progression

- Is a PhD necessary or will an LLM suffice/is there some form of glass ceiling for non-PhD holders for more senior positions eg Assoc Prof?

(Disclaimer: I know all the paths I've listed here are highly selective and not easy by any means. Currently working hard in school to attain my goals haiz).
