s://.personneltoday.com/hr/senior-partner-criticises-high-pay-for-new-lawyers/

Quote:
Senior partner at Pinsent Masons Richard Foley, told the Innovative Lawyers Summit on 22 October that six-figure salaries for newly qualified lawyers were unjustifiable.

He said: “You see stuff in the press about £125k as a starting salary for an NQ [newly qualified lawyer] … If I was on the other side of the table, I would be thinking how much more value am I going to get from that person?”

Foley added: “The levels of pay in major private practice law firms are completely unsustainable.”
I look forward to the day when NQ pay is S$3k across the board

He's salty because his firm can't keep up, maybe because its not as profitable as the US and Magic Circles? Nobody is forcing his firm to anyway.

Pushing down NQ pay to $3K (i.e. auditor level payscale) will never happen. As it is, law firms are already suffering from a severe attrition of senior associates at the midlevel. Good luck trying to find people willing to do legal saikang at auditors' salary scales.

The question now is not the lack of work, but the lack of able bodies to do it. Ask any Big 4 partner and they will tell you how difficult it is to find senior associates.

£125k translates to about S$20k a month for NQ... Just saying.

Maybe if they paid them and groom them for partnership they can find more

Lol old news. Should have seen UK legal commentators laughing at this pathetic attempt by a “top law firm” to PR (and fail) his way out of underpaying his associates.

Pinsent Masons isn't a top law firm by any means. Not even 'Silver Circle'. Maybe 'Bronze Circle' or 'Iron Circle' lol

If OP bothered to provide the entire article in context instead cherry picking one part of the article...

The senior partner is criticising the likes of Kirkland and WC which are paying NQ £100k upwards per annum. Pinson Mason are paying their NQ £70+k per annum which equates to £6k per month.

Not to mention that PM is hardly a 'top tier' law firm plus the article is old news. Good luck looking forward to the day when NQ pay is 3k you sheep.

10% or A- average, whichever is more. Always turns out to be 10% because an A- average is actually harder to attain than top 10%.
