Default Advice needed for a 31yr old diploma holder

Hi People,

As above title , i'm a 31yr old diploma holder currently working in insurance industry ever since i graduated from poly(7 years).

My first 4yrs i was an admin assistant and coming to the fifth year i was then promoted to executive and after a year which is yr 2014 i was promoted to managerial level.
Work has been tough so to say for my colleagues as well, everyday is a fire fighting,oh..just to summarise abit my job scope mainly deals with relationships/customer service.

As we are entering into the month of march which everyone is waiting for the bonus, i got a job offer doing similar stuffs, pay wise up about 15% however its a contract basis job.1 year renewable

So Guys, need.some advice as the benefits wise definitely is lower than my current,i did a comparison overall its just on par if i factor in all the benefits. I'm in a dilemma as my current boss is really good to me,she is the one that has actually promoted me twice from admun to executive and to managerial level. I reckon that the reason is because the port folio that im handling is one of the toughest.

My advice is not to take up. As you say benefits already lower, so net net all in the total package increase maybe worth 10%. It is not worth to take up a contract job for just 10% increase. You can get stuck in a situation where you are forever on contract renewal.

Also everybody knows insurance is the industry where job titles are the most inflated, so headhunters will not take your "manager" title seriously as you straight away just promote to executive after 1 year, somemore doing admin. You dont want to get into a situation where your CV effectively reflects a admin exec/officer on contract making it hard to get good jobs.

Also admin side in most companies is treated like dirt because they are cost cente, always budget kana cut, headcount not replaced etc. It is not easy to find a good boss willing to take care and defend the people below. Stay put and treasure what you have.

Hi Bro,

thank you for your advice.

sorry just to add on,my promotion was because i was tranfer to the sales team from admin team. that is where i met my boss and due to the tough port folio that i was handling , she actually put up the promotion as she felt i deserved it.

yes,a good boss is hard to find but problem is everyone is feeling the same as i felt, most of our ex colleagues who have left are enjoying a better work life balance.

The long term question is really do you want to do sales or go back to admin? If you want to continue sales should stay for at least a few years to gain some exp. before hopping. Consumer or corporate sales of basic financial products are easily portable within banking & finance industry, so with the right exp can easily hop around.

If you think sales is not for you and want to go back to admin work life balance no direct KPI etc., then try not to stay beyond 1-2 years, otherwise get labeled a sales CV.

Also not put down or what, but I think every salesman in the insurance industry is some sort of manager, director, specialist or avp, I wouldn't put too much stock into that sort of thing though I'm sure it's a good gesture from the boss.
