Confusion is on a distinguished road
Default dilemma between 2 jobs

Hi All,

Need advice from you.

I am currently holding a regional key account management position (indoor/outdoor) of above S$5k, I am also entitled to transport allowance, mobile allowance, parking allowance, travelling allowance if i travel.

However I do not like to do sales job. I dun find myself a good hunter or account farmer.

I prefer to do support work and now i am offered a job in an offshore industry working as a proj administrator supporting a director and few engineers but my new job will have to go with a pay cut of abt 40% and no any allowances.

However i pretty like the job function and eventually this new job will lead to a HR role. I am interested in HR role and been wanted to go in, but the start off pay is too low for me to go in. Whereas this new job with start a OK pay (although under paycut of 40%), but i get to do HR in future. But to go into the new job, i need to forgo my car, new pay unable to support, forgo my flexible working hour.

I am now in dilemma whether i should change job.
My new co is waiting for my answer but i have yet informed my current co about my tender.

I am very confused in the 2 choices, pls give some advice to me.

For me, 40% cut is a definite NO NO!
You may wish to continue with your 5K+ job and go for upgrading courses on HR, since you are leaning towards HR.
Are you a degree holder? You may consider UniSIM Master in Human Capital Management or SMU HR Graduate Certification Programme or NYP Specialist Diploma in Human Resource Management.
After that then you go find a proper HR management job or seek assistance from the respective school's career services.

But i am really unhappy with current job as I hate doing sales.

How long can i go on with such kind of life?

Will dare be anyone dare to go for pay cut 40% to look for new avenue?

40% cut is too much. Further, you may not like your new job either. There are many unknowns - colleagues, bosses and even job scope (what they promise you may not be what you get). My humble advice is to reject the offer, stay on in current company and continue to seek greener pastures.

Yes.. 40% pay cut without allowance is too much.
I bet you are a girl.

Why not asking to change a job function within your own company first.
example: Sales support role or Sales Marketing support role or Sales analyst. At least you will not have a 40% paycut.

furthermore, it's easier for you to jump to HR afterwards

Depends on what you really want and whether you have any long term commitments. My friend took a 30% pay cut to leave banking to join non-profit organization as he was sick of the banking work culture and politics.

He is now happily working doing charity and related work with a lower pay but much better work-life balance, nicer colleagues and environment etc.

Thanks for all advice.

I have good relationship with current colleagues and bosses.
Work-life is also balance.
I seldom need to work late and usually goes back on dot.
the dreadful thing about travelling has yet come. But if i really hate to travel at current.
Boss allow me to put on hold until i am ready.

But i find something missing in the work, the PASSION.
I am holding to the job just becos the pay is high.
First, i do not know how long i can hold on.
When you have no interest, u simply doing for the sake of doing and i feel i cant give 100% commitment to my job now.

I wanna to try something new which i been longing to do so. I am afraid if i let go this opportunity, i may not be able to find such good opportunity.

But i am also not sure how good this opportunity is as new boss can sing till beautifully.
if i get in and it not as beautiful as it is, I have to just stick with it.

I am not able to return to current position and also do not wish to.

By then, will i end up holding low pay with unhappy job???
Do i take the risk to go?

If stay, i b unhappy with this job which i know for sure.
To go, i am not sure whether new job is what i want, there happy & unhappy, each 50%.

Since you have a girl, in my opinion passion will become secondary. Your priority will be building a better future for your girl. Your current higher salary of 5K will enable you to help your girl when necessary. Your parents will be happier too.

You will really need to forget about work-life balance. Leave your girl to your parents. Go for upgrading courses of your passion in the mean time. And just think about your girl and strive hard.
