This is a very sensible and practical piece of advice.

No matter which HQ posting you are in, your work will inevitably require you to work with a range of stakeholders in and out of the education system. So the officer needs to quickly grasp the unique value he/she brings to the table in the role, no matter how seemingly small, and demonstrate ability to perform well and even beyond the baseline. And in the process of doing so, one builds up a network and makes oneself known for his/her perceived competencies (and weaknesses).

No no. The reason why people don't rise is because they're not a high tier scholar. It has nothing to do with their attitude and competence!

Haha, it's ridiculous right? But at the same time, high tier scholars have many structured opportunities to rub shoulders with people that can change their career fates significantly, and also many built-in opportunities to rotate around the whole-of-gov to get a very holistic view of things.

The rest of us have to fight hard for such opportunities. That is not to say that we will never get them; they are just not served course by course on a silver platter.

Correct. PSC scholars are automatically absorbed into the PSLP whereas the rest of the lower tiers and high performing non-scholars have to compete real hard to have a chance. The system is relatively transparent. In future tell your kids to perform very well academically and attain high achievement in ccas and develop leadership qualities.

Curious about the teachers here, how many colleagues have left your department in the last 2 years? Could be resigned, transferred out etc.

And how many replacements did your department receive?

Ok not within the last 2 years but when I was a BT in the mid-'10s, we had 6 perm teachers teaching my subject. Some were KPs so they took fewer classes. When I was posted out of the school a few years ago, it went from 4 down to 3.

Currently there is 1 perm teacher and 1 FAJT holding the fort.
