I think I'm a good performer with drive to succeed but I failed in the gahment sector. No promotion and totally unrecognized while those careermaking tasks only go to young staff below 24 who have just joined. The main problem I see is my age. A lot of people here feel that anyone over 30 is old already, and I do notice promotions here occur a lot more for people below 30. Me, I joined when I was 29. Oh well.

I have been considering taking up a job in one of the health care groups, like nhg or singhealth, if they would offer me a position. Are these private or gahment?

Dont take that offer. Nonsense.

Actually $4800 pay is quite reasonable as it is pretty close to $5k. Simple maths, assuming at the point when you join the gov job with starting pay $3000. with 8 yrs of experience, assuming totally no promotion increment, just a simple annual increment of about $150 (very conservative), that would equates to $4200. assuming increment is $200, then that would be $4600.

looking at your situation, chances are you will be due for promotion in a year or two as you will hit your grade salary ceiling soon. stay put, get the higher pay (of say $5.2k), then go look around for the next job (above 6k) as the next promotion will be another donkey years away.

join private sector. most of my peers in private sector making > SGD 10K per month by 34 - 35 in areas like private banking, trading, IT and even selling insurance. i myself am making > SGD 15K monthly at 34.

once you have built up knowledge, experience and contacts from the early days, private sector can be quite smooth sailing. why waste your youth in govt service unless you are a high flyer that can hit superscale by 34? some people i know in govt service are even more stressed out than me and earning much less.

I really don't think 'll be getting any promotion next year. I know staff here who had no promotion for 8-12 years and many quit already because of that. This is the norm. Many of those who are still here have had no promotion for 6 years at least. I know quite a few MX11s here who also joined at the top of their grade ceiling 4 years ago and did not get promoted yet.. so they hit the ceiling already and are not getting promoted soon as the next level up is director level, but they're MX11s, another story altogether.

That's why I cannot consider staying anymore. A lot of people who quit in the first year commented that the progression rate here was way slower than other places they'd been in, and I noticed it too.

Keep applying for other jobs, dont give up. just keep sending your cv. hit rate of 1% or less is quite common.

well, all those i mentioned above studied engineering, myself included, but we all either started with non-engineering jobs, or changed professions. come to think of it, none of my friends remained as engineer by 34-35, most go into IT and banking.
