You hear is somewhat correct la.
My division manager told me he has a quota how many M2 he can have in one division otherwise can't justify. Top won't approve.
And yes the way they promote etc is nominate one.
I also overhear another division someone ask how come he was promoted to M1.
The answer he got is... Need to fill the M1 quota. You're the longest E6 here so have to promote lo.
Cause that guy don't want to deal with managerial role so he doesn't want M1..
End up just higher pay doing the same thing.
Same thing happened to my team out of 6 E6 need to have 1 M1 the boss just choose the one who was longest here with company and oldest.
No merit based one. He said if he promote the younger age one the older staff will not follow the instructions from young people.

Can confirm.
That's why it's so political.
And also why those vocal, extrovert, those chosen to do event committee, presentation etc. Will likely be promoted next.
Those support behind the scene will never have the chance.
This is something school don't teach.
The ability to be promotion worthy without doing the actual work.
Blame this on the Singapore education system where they groom children into thinking if they do the work individually and get a good grade they will get merit. Promotion etc.
Working world doesn't work like this.
Promotion is based on luck, raptor with boss, business growth
All those engineers work so hard overtime etc aiming for promotion should wake up theor idea.
You work extra hours save project your reward will be "this engineer very responsible, next time any problem find him."
Yep. You will be rewarded with more work.
Those cannot do one, nobody will ask them..
So people usually just aim to be average. Just on the radar. But never on the. Radar.
Visible enough to not be below average but not vocal enough to be volunteered for work.

My team and I were very vocal on many matters. But probably because he thought we were trying to change status quo and had to spend extra budget on new software and hardware to improve our product, we were just treated as noise, suggestion deemed unnecessary and labelled as no significant contribution. He ended up promoting people who were in the same path as him.
Months later, customers one by one was asking to use techniques which we were pushing for the division to adopt. The management just came to us and ask why didn't we adopt the methods.
After that few such incidents, half the team left within the next year.

I used to be a fresh grad young with energy. Passion.
Now after 4 years I just couldn't care less.
Just come to work late. Go long lunch.
Let boss scold. Let customer scold.
Time to go home. Go home.
No future. Am I depressed?
Don't feel like looking for job.
The company have silenced my young talent.
Now I'm just a disposable asset.
No energy to push for this and that.
Bosses just want us to be engaged at work for kpi purpose.
Beyond that, they really see us as children to be manipulated.
At home I'm a parent.
But at work, I'm being schooled by the old people on top.
So like a child, I also can't be bothered.

Same what. Some senior also stuck at E6 for 6 years before promoted to M1.
Then M1 also stuck for long long.
Basically ST follow this salary grade etc is dsta one isn't it.
If I set up my company, I'll have salary grade to match number of years.
So 2 years E5 will auto go up E6. Then 2 to 3 years E7 then 2 to 3 years @E8.
Etx
Basically once you join ST you're stuck at your rank that's it.
I've seen those 4 to 5 years programmer E5 much better than those hired directly come in E6...
Anyway ST is not a software company. It never was and will never be.
Their business are totally different.
Just that some solutions requires software...
Which is why software developer are 3rd class citizen.
2nd class citizen are project managers all the connection manage dsta, mindef etc.
The 1st class citizen are those 2nd class citizen stayed long enough to know the culture get promoted to director, avp, vp outlast and outplay the politics.
You'll see the senior management keep going higher and higher with each reorg.
You don't see the bottom moving anywehree. Except laterally to support more project.
The top also know this. That's why they always try to give monetary reward like national day bonus etc....
Make employees happy.
But new leadership don't care about this thing. Only their new position and power. Everything lean and mean now. Cut cut cut. But their pay getting more. Not cut.
|
National Day bonus and SSOS all these old story already, no more such benefit.
Don’t even know still got annual bonus or not for the earning from 2020. Now all like sibei sian now, ask those M1 and M2 regarding bonus all say don’t know yet.

Super Duper Agree! Work hard also the same. Slack also the same. Just chill. Management only give recognition to their scholars and people who suck up to them. no effort required for them.
But don't agree on the part don't look for jobs. Go ahead a get a better job, so people in ST will be further under manpower. show them people are willing to hire u with better pay and opportunities.
Good luck!
