This is something school don't teach.

The ability to be promotion worthy without doing the actual work.
Blame this on the Singapore education system where they groom children into thinking if they do the work individually and get a good grade they will get merit. Promotion etc.

Working world doesn't work like this.
Promotion is based on luck, raptor with boss, business growth

All those engineers work so hard overtime etc aiming for promotion should wake up theor idea.
You work extra hours save project your reward will be "this engineer very responsible, next time any problem find him."

Yep. You will be rewarded with more work.
Those cannot do one, nobody will ask them..

So people usually just aim to be average. Just on the radar. But never on the. Radar.
Visible enough to not be below average but not vocal enough to be volunteered for work.
My team and I were very vocal on many matters. But probably because he thought we were trying to change status quo and had to spend extra budget on new software and hardware to improve our product, we were just treated as noise, suggestion deemed unnecessary and labelled as no significant contribution. He ended up promoting people who were in the same path as him.

Months later, customers one by one was asking to use techniques which we were pushing for the division to adopt. The management just came to us and ask why didn't we adopt the methods.

After that few such incidents, half the team left within the next year.
