Politically correct to say no age discrimination, but is probably a factor when CS interview you.

Mid career transits across different industry is not always easy.
For those that did it, any one care to share their experiences either way?
I am an early-mid-career-switch from private to stat board (around 30 years old) so it was not too hard for me to enter the stat board.

However, it is rare for those above 40 to do so based on my observations. Those that managed to do so had very specialized/developed skillsets and qualifications. Not some generic office jobs.

Examples of these skillsets include software architecture, software dev, data science, actuarial, risk modelling, etc.

The other type of people above 40 who made the switch are those who are somewhat "known" in the industry so that they can serve as a connection to industry or do some thought-leadership.

I have around 14 YOE hoping to switch to stat board / civil sector. Wouldn't mind getting +/- 10% of my current package of 240kpa (target range 215kpa to 265kpa).
Graduated from local U engineering and 14 years of technical field with some management experience.
Wonder my profile more suitable to which employer.

Unless you're preparing for a 30%-50% paycut, wait for your next life if you want to join CS.

I made the transition into civil service after about 8 years in the private sector. Same discipline, so skillset wasn't an issue. Also helped that I was from a vendor servicing one of the Ministries, and so the clients knew who I was.

One thing I must say is that hiring departments/managers in civil service really appreciate a good recommendation. This is especially as the hiring process is quite slow, and also as the 'probation' period of one year makes it very painful if the wrong person is hired.

How much is your paycut? How many YOE did you have?

8-9 YOE, joined this largest stat board in Singapore. Very obvious which stat board.
About 20% pay cut. Technical role I guess?

Your observations basically support hearsay rumors - difficult to enter CS after age 40 especially for typical office roles. SG public sector starting salaries are actually competitive so it makes sense for them to target younger entrants with actual working experience.

Once past a certain age, they probably look at specific experience and skillsets of those who can contribute immediately.

So the poster who earlier say about jumping out to private then back into CS, there is a very high chance it will not be feasible at all.

Ya, this is the tried and tested approach.
You were basically in the role already, just under different company.
In a way, you have the exact experience and skillset they were looking for.
