There r different portals to find work. Though night time locums r more in demand, there r always new clinics opening up asking for anchor drs or regular locums.

It is less secure with no paid cpf, mc, annual leave or maternity or hospitalisation leave though. So make sire u have yr own insurance and for females completed yr family.

But pros is higher hrly rates and freedom and flexibility to work when u want to usually.

Oh anchor drs get benefits like regular employees but not freelance locums.

There r always GP drs or locum drs falling sick or taking leave for holidays or family emergencies so the need for adhoc locums come up and that is when the rates r higher. When it is a last minute slot. But up to u to bargain though. A matter of demand and supply.

It is also quite interesting to be a locum. I worked in a clinic along Geylang before. Learnt how to do HIV mouth swabs and finger prick checks. Saw sex workers. And now treating elderlies with chronic illnesses part time too. I see neonates to 97 years old. Life is interesting. And can always do graduate diplomas in different areas that u r interested in. A basic GDFM helps.

Can I ask, when you sign up for these portals to look for jobs,
Will the gp employers interview these locums before hiring them to do a shift? If yes, any particular things they looking for? (Like mmed/gdfm etc?)

Can I also ask, for private GPs, is the knowledge that you gain from your hospital medical postings useful or it is a completely different world?

Most don't really interview. They can check if u have a full registration online. But must give MCR number. One asked for NRIC but most don't. Actually, they should. Some ask if u have GDFM or MMed but even if u don't, u can still locum though having them is an advantage.

Hospital postings definitely help. I did a lot of paeds snd geri, cardio, pysch and polyclinic postings. But no surgical MO postings so I don't do minor surgery but most clinics don't mind this.

But for a lot of GPs, they have to rely on health screenings, vaccinations and aesthetics to help boost income. Cannot just rely on managed contracts seeing company subsidised patients.

Career advancement is up to u. U can set up yr own clinic or partner to open a chain.

I don't like the headache of doing business. So I just freelance locum. Free and easy. Saw my friends set up and failed before too.

Anyone knows if the pay rise is applicable to other doctors who are no longer MOs? Do they get a $500 increase as well? If so that will be great! The market has neglected doctors for a long time.
