I am exiting in July. just received akt results yesterday which I passed (i.e will be taking clinicals in October/ November)

Ops has arranged for a preparatory course for all residents which involved weekly clinicals (like mock consult case practice, lectures etc) from August onwards. The preparatory course is open to all residents, even if one chooses not to stay in ops. (It is conducted after hours weekly)

I was wondering if it is a better to join the prep course and go locum instead of working full-time with ops. That way you can set aside time to study (mmed after all is a very knowledge intensive exam). I will still get the relevant exam prep teaching (through the weekly clinicals), but of course lose out on the ops caseload experience. (I am not sure how critical is that as after all not all chronic cases in ops is managed in mmed style due to time constraints and other factors.. and real pts also don't always behave like the way sp behave in exams..)

I have seen seniors done that, some passed some failed. But those who stayed in ops also some passed and some failed.
So not sure if I should do that.

its not just the prep course, its the entire examination prep atmosphere with institutional support and comrade in arms that will help you pass.
R1 to R3 dont help you pass ur m.med
its actually R4 when u improve a lot

Sounds like bs leh.. I'm a trainee up north in Scotland. North East is the cheapest region in the UK apart from Northern Ireland. 1200 for studio? Are you living in some penthouse at the Quay? Why can't u cook? If u did med school there u should have learnt some cooking by now. Shop at lidl or aldi, meal prep can be 20 quid a week even with recent inflation. 900 a month for taxi u might as well lease a car or buy a used car.

I heard North East is really good for surgical training. The famous book surgical talk is from there - James Cook. Northumberland is such a nice area if u like outdoors

Seems easier to be in sg if you cant hack it. Just survive Mopex, grab everyday and eat hawker food. Get full reg and be gp. Surgical training in UK takes forever anyway, might need further PhD, not sure how easy it is to come back after cct, perhaps can work in middle east.

I went to a Med school in London so I was pretty used to eating my housemates cooking and the general conveniences.

Yeah, I am thinking of quitting surgical training for GP/Psych training. I don’t really wanna return to SG now because I don’t think I can survive MOPEX. Would rather come back as a RP in family polyclinic

Just chiong MSRA, do well and get a GPST spot in London. 540+ should get somewhere easily. CCT and locum in London or go to Canada or Australia, should be higher quality of life than sg. If not move over to aus and do psych training, heard it is easy to get in without being PR.

RP in polyclinic is a lot of work for not much, might as well live in British Columbia and earn more

actually sg residency system isnt good
the newly minted surgeons cannot handle complications.
but it is not just surgery, most other specs, the quality is pretty average.

i think uk system is better ~ takes abt 10 years
whereas sg system is 5 years
you cant cook a dish in 30min when it takes 60min
