Fat cats in lawsoc thinks the problem lies with millennial lawyers.
Lots of spilled ink about the Great Resignation in law these past few weeks. ST and BT running full-on media campaign to show that Lawsoc is doing something

I recall reading some lawyer's suggestion for full salary bands, revenue, RPL, PPP and PEP stats to be published for all major law firms here. Sort of like AmLaw and The Lawyer stats for US and UK.

Info asymmetry puts junior lawyers at a great disadvantage and vulnerable to exploitation. I suspect the 'Gini coefficient' between the top earning EPs and junior assocs in local firms, is larger than even in top white shoe or MC firms.

Alas, another feature of our local law industry is that the market simply cannot support a large number of BigLaw firms. THe market is too small and saturated.

Also, any one who suggests that skip JLC to go immediately for academia as the obvious step clearly doesn’t appreciate fully what academia is about and how a JLC stint would go a very long way to helping an academic career in the long run. A quick look at the past experiences of the local academics at our two leading law schools would have demolished that false assertion quite easily. Just as anyone reading the CVs of newer academics will know it is complete nonsense to say that most of them are in the top 1-5% of law school. A fair number of them have 2:1s which makes the point completely absurd. Give advice all you want but at least be honest about it.

So yes, it’s very clear that the initial advice was at best wrongheaded. At worst, promotion of one’s own background at the price of giving dangerous advice to aspiring lawyers.
The asst profs that I know are all FCH holders.
Maybe your acquaintances are sub-par?
Besides, everyone is entitled to issue their own opinions.
Who’s to say your advice or opinion is superior to all others unless you’re the apex court?

Errr. He never talked about his acquaintances. He asked people to check the profiles which are available online. And he’s right if you look. You on the other hand are relying on your acquaintances. Although I must say, this entire debate is pointless on all counts. Both you and him seriously need to take a chill pill. And focus on salaries, which is what this forum is about.

Maybe we can start compiling the payscales for the SG offices of international firms as well?

Quite chill - you can decide your caseload.

Just note that you need to do the probono cases under your firm's name, so they must be onboard with your plan.

Therefore, paid work always comes first, so if you got to do a stupid doc review, or review the case pleadings (even if it's for someone who might get life in prison), you have to prioritise paid work.

But tbh, the actual level of commitment is very low, you don't really need to do much, especially if you do PG cases.

Wink

Hi all,

I saw Herbert Smith Freehills has a vacancy for associate. Anyone has any experience there? Want to hear from others before I apply. Not many reviews out there (glassdoor, payscale etc)

Lol don't bother, alot of the int firms provide a fake "vacancy" listing just so they can say they didn't find anyone suitable locally and recruit from overseas, in line with local regulations.

Have it on good authority that HSF's position is fake, they just posting the role to satisfy SG's employment laws before hiring a guy they pre-selected from overseas.

You can apply and be a statistic of one of the "lousy local(s)" if you want.
