Case in point, DSC.

Talented litigators can make a lot even if they set up a shop in Chinatown, if they're known in the market as being good advocates (and with the benefit of not paying thru the nose for rental in some prime office space)

But liti is a more level playing field. The cream of the crop will be doing Senior Counsel work and commanding SC salaries, and the average ones maybe can barely get by comfortably after paying overheads and staff salaries.
so tldr if im the client, im really just there for partner tan ah kow SC and not the firm's name? makes sense

is there any situation where i go to a firm and just go, hay i need lawyer sia. and get assigned a partner

I know many B4 corporate partners who are more than good enough to immediately jump to offshore firms and triple their salaries, but they know that due to many factors their chances of making equity partnership if they do so become basically non-existent. They will stay because eventually, if they make EP, their salary will beat anything you can make in MC/WS bar EP there.

Of course, the above only applies for corporate teams. For litigation, they have no exit options, but the point remains that equity partnership is the goal. Remember when a local B4 liti HOD's salary was mentioned in parliament - it was in the millions annually.
Come join me at Fervent Chamber. I Clarence Lun will pay you higher than JP salary in Big 4 and have better work life balance. An offer not to be missed!

If not retained, re-take while working part time. Apply again after you pass. It's a long road, but don't lose heart and try to see it through. Giving up now means all the past effort goes to waste.

No. Do you honestly think a company want to retain someone who cannot even get on with the job think it necessary to tell supervisor about his/her problem? What are you expecting? For your supervisor to say poor thing and sayang you? You are paid to do a job. Unless you have been performing consistently that give u some sort of leeway, colleagues are generally not that understanding.

I have a colleague whose work is substandard at best, cries/throw tantrums at work and takes leaves. Whenever the colleague tells others about problems/ailments, what I feel is just plain annoyance and annoyance and think he/she trying to gain sympathy.
Please ask yourself. If you are a boss, who do you rather hire? The one who cannot cope and struggling and make his/her struggles your problem or those that trudge on?
