Please remember that Capital Markets in Singapore has been on a downtrend.

As a practice area, domestic CM has not been doing well since 2011.

Coupled with trade wars in China-US, Upcoming elections in the region, regional political instability, investors are very cautious.

If you’re not profitable as a practice area, it’s hard to continue.

Singapore law watch dude.

Big 4 have been trying to muscle into legal services for ages. Since the days of Arthur Anderson until Enron put a temporary crimp on that. They have better success in the UK but are being stymied in e USA by the powerful American bar association.

Personally I think despite their humongous size, the big 4 will still have to fight tooth n nail in the ultra competitive legal market like any other law firm. Since law is still pretty jurisdiction based, their intl size advantages are somewhat reduced.

For partners in top tier law firms there's usually no compelling reason to take the hit in prestige and join the bean counters. Esp since legal services will always be considered auxiliary to their core audit and "consulting" (ie pretend, non-MBB consulting) lines.

For younger lawyers whose partnership prospects r increasingly slim in this day and age however, joining the boring accountants might not be a bad value proposition.

Rachel eng is a giant of the legal profession in Singapore
She is probably the most successful female lawyer in Singapore
And the most prominent and visible CM lawyer
Her drive, focus and tenacity all very admirable

Law is one of the few professions/sectors in singapore that is progressive. If you're a smart & tenacious lady, you have just as good a shot at rising to the top as a man

A large proportion of the major law firms in singapore are led or were led by female managing partners, eg rachel eng, lisa theng, lee suet fern, kwa kim li, marina chin, deborah barker, lorraine tay

so much better than in some other countries where people whine and grumble about gender pay gap and self aggrieved problems

That’s the thing about born and bred Singaporeans - can do attitude.
In Britain, US, people just whine and complain and say not fair.
Come up with some “me too” scheme.
But what are they doing.

Also in the article on her world-
She is also a loving wife and mother.
Really the hallmark of a true and successful lawyer
