woops, posted my reply before reading yours carefully. realized that you meant downturn instead. Yup, agreed. There is risk inherent with banks during financial downturns but in general it's a great time to be a technologist - you can look for any other jobs elsewhere.
The VPs/EDs I talked to all seen their fair share of being fired (and being fired themselves)during 2008 but said that tech people don't have an issue of finding another tech job elsewhere when needed.

big 4 is relatively easy to get offer.
whereas bank T&O is much harder of course.

Bank tech is very different from bank ops, but people like to lump them together as back office jobs. Tech usually pays better than ops.
To the guy who say tech can be easily outsourced, it's not true at all. Developers are very hard to outsource, especially if you built the bank's infrastructure. You really think a bank will let go of someone who BUILT their trading and risk management softwares and understand everything about how they work? These software are extremely important to the banks and trillion dollars are traded using these platforms every day.
Bank ops = accounting and processing documents, or maybe some process optimization if you are in the higher-end of ops
Bank tech = building and maintaining banking platforms and infrastructure
Tech people also have the extra freedom where they can quit banking any time to join the tech industry and still get a good salary.

Most technical stuffs are offshored outsourced to cheaper locations or even Big 4, at international banks. The Tech MA programs train grads to become more of a tech generalist these days.
If you prefer technical stuffs, join Big 4.

advisory harder yes but it is different from corp fin advisory which is harder. the "easier" advisory would be IT, risk, internal audit
