Default How to negotiate for higher pay?

Hi All,

I have recently received an offer from an organisation and the organisation is willing to offer me the job at my expected pay. But I have got feedback from my friend working in the organisation that the pay range was higher than what i have asked for the job grade that I was offered. Is there any way i can negotiate for higher pay even though the expected pay i have put in the application form was matched?

I think you need to provide more generic details first before pple can answer you.

Is your expected salary in line with industry norms?
How does your friend know the salary range for this role? (Most companies keep such details very secret unless your friend is in key senior mgmt or HR)
Does this salary range pertain to someone who has more experience and more qualified than you?
Are you currently in a job?

My friend has been working in the organisation for close to 10 years and the salary range for each grade is transparent to all employees. Actually , i should say my expected pay is within the pay range of the grade offered, i just thought i could have asked for higher and i need a strategy on how to negotiate my way through this. Any strategy that you can share?

I am currently in a job and the pay will be determined by the grade you are in.

So the company basically agreed to your expected salary and offered you based on that? Now this is going to be tough. I don't know if you can ask for more now since interview over, only left offer which has been given to you.

The only possible way is you pretend you have another offer on hand which is higher than what you are getting from this company but you have to say that you really like working for this company blah blah but it's hard to justify joining this company based on lower offer.

I really don't see any other way.

Next time ask your friend first since you know he was working in that company?

Most salary ranges are very wide, you can't just automatic assume your salary should be at mid point or higher.

The more important thing is also about the budget they have for the headcount and also how desperate they need you.

If this is a big MNC with good prospect and you intend to stay long term, I suggest you better not try stunt just to make a few hundred $$$ extra. If you lie by saying you have another higher offer and they refuse to budge, you will look stupid in front of your boss and hr when you sheepishly accept the supposed "lower" pay offer.

I am thinking of telling them that there will be salary adjustment in my current company soon in Jan 2015 (anyway i can only join them in early 2015 as i need to serve 3 mths notice and at the same time take bonus and AWS) so that's why i am asking for more now to compensate for that. Not sure whether the HR is going to accept this kind of justification. Any comments?

Always negotiate salary based on future expected salary, else you lose out if the hiring process takes a long time and you get a salary adjustment in the meantime.
