quant is the short form for quantitative analyst in banks... unless you are talking about some other kind of quantitative analyst????

As a fresh grad myself from a local uni this year, i have to say that the job market is rather terrible. However there are still opportunities out there. Again it boils down to how desperate you want your dream job. You have to be realistic in your expectations and skills. I know that quant analyst do really earn a lot. Based on what i heard from my career adviser, he told me that one of the students managed to secure a position at a local bank with a starting pay of around 8k. But then he is a double degree holder and possesses a computer degree as well. Not sure about the other but my guess is something related. Do consider carefully your options before making a decision.

Yes there are opportunities definitely but he has chosen one of the most difficult industry to break into unfortunately. Banking and finance is the "in" thing now and what everyone wants a slice of that pie. Even a basic operations job that is deemed lousy has lots of people applying for it because to them they think it is a stepping stone (dream on, its not as easy as you think to jump).

The requirement has inflated so much that it is near impossible to get in without super good academic result combined with good CCA. Now of course if you have something special that makes you stand out and show you have the talent(start your own business, wrote a paper etc) you would definitely stand a chance. If not you have to be realistic and know that a 2nd upper is nowhere near enough for you to get into banking.

Now of course I am referring to front office jobs. If you are looking for back office like ops or tech then it is definitely easier, they accept anything from SIM to DL to all kind jiapalang pass degree. But that will bring you nowhere closer to being a quant. Get a related job, excel in your job, get a brand name MFE and you might have a higher chance of breaking in in the future.

hey guys really thanks for all the inputs. i have also asked my friends and most of them share similar views. haiz guess the market is quite jialat now...

Actually I have done my internship in this same role but just at another MNC company and i would say i like the job scoop, culture and most of the other aspects...JUST THAT pay prospect is not high compare to others and i think that is one of the impt factors to take into considerations (since i'm living in Singapore) and tts y i'm so tempted to try banking and finance.

Well...since it seems really difficult to break into banking and finance so i guess its not worth the risk to give up my current opportunity and wait for smth that has a low prob of success

The pay is not high compare to others? or just to banking and finance? not much job can compare their pay to banking and finance (there are a few, IT/management consulting comes to mind). But in general banking and finance has one of the highest pay, even for equivalent level job. However the banking and finance sector is not only hard to get in but even if you do get in you have to work super hard to excel, you can't just be average inside. Retrenchment comes often, swift and fast so job stability is another problem when you have a family to take care of. Life in the finance sector is not as rosy as what everyone paints it to be.

There are millions of workers in singapore and only 6% work in the finance sectors. Does that mean that the other 94% are struggling? Work hard at your job, and when a opportunity appears, grab it. Don't hold on to a unrealistic dream.

my advice to fresh grads from local uni is to widen your job vision. as in dont think that just because we got a degree and from local uni, we must only look for/take up jobs which are only fitting for our "status". there are only so many "pretigious" jobs in the banks, mncs and govt. there are plently of jobs available in SMEs and other rather unknown industries. if you're still jobless, you shld seriously consider these options. true that u may lose face a bit when all ur friends work in big name companys, but it may end up u having more pride, job satisfaction and better opportunities.

Yes, pursue your dream. Be a baker, hawker or property agent! You may be the next big thing!
