After reading some of the threads, civil service and stat board do not value 3rd class or even 2nd lower highly.
I graduated from NTU Mech Eng without honors. I can't imagine myself working in civil service or stat board.

If you have the intention of entering the public sector, it is likely they will offer you something higher but career progression could be stagnant based on class of hons. However, if you prefer work life balance, it is not a bad idea to enter public sector then. If I were you, I might try my luck by applying to MNC.

I agree with the post. MNC is a better bet than public sector.

hard truth. Better bet would be MNC in the long run. Though nowadays MNCs are becoming more and more choosy with such a large pool of candidates to choose from, they might not grant you a chance for an interview without a second upper. However, that is for fresh grads, if you are already working and have experience, they might consider your experience more than the cert itself. cheers

what happened is we grad at a bad time, so we start low, start low + low increment = crapped. last year he found out a fresh grad got higher pay then him, so he went to kpkb management and got a 1050increase.
He is civil project mgt btw, ntu 2.2

True but your honors will decide your ceiling.
Even I can enter public sector, my growth will be limited by the ceiling.

Yea. no hons definitely will be at a huge disadvantage, but I do have friends who just wanted a stable job with decent salary and they don't mind the inferiority within the ministries/stat boards. It ultimately boils down to individual's preference and ambition. Have seen many who opted for MNCs at the beginning and after few years joined public sector for better work life balance. Last time I see the worth of joining MNCs, but now the market is so bad with many FTs around pushing down the salary bar. I think it is impt to select the right MNCs to join instead just jumping in randomly i.e. not all MNCs are good.

That's right. But the ceiling won't be too pathetic...govt won't let you live too miserably. It could the case whereby you will earn better than some of your peers who fought hard in the private sector at the expense of personal time.

Currently, I have very good work-life balance in MNC.
70% of the time can leave office before 5.45pm - 6.00pm.
29% of the time can go home before 5.00pm - 5.30pm.
Only need to overtime 1% of the time.
Office hours is 8.30am to 5.30pm.
