Hi guys. I'm currently still studying Mech Engin in NTU. Gonna grad in a yrs time. Wanted to ask for some advice on being a sales engineer. Does having more technical knowledge count eg. gain some experience before switching to sales or having more sales experience count? eg. start sales straight and learning on the job?

Hi. Sales experience is more important than technical experience. I have been call up by quite a few company. All different product. But the main thing they looking for is what is your customer industry. If you like to be in sales industry, join sales straight. Sales only need little general knowledge on the product. After closing sales, rest is done by application engineer. But be inform that the car allowance is around 500-1000. And now the car price is quite..... ( u should get my meanong on this part. ). When joining a company, check on the car allowance, commission scheme, bonus scheme etc.

I would advice ppl going into sales line to be focus on what they are best at. If not, the more you jump, the lesser value you will contribute to the "next" company.

To be focus, meaning, you need to know the markets, people and product well.

When all these are attained, you can dream big and ask for better remuneration package, if not, even if you are given a fat package, but if you are unable to deliver, you will be shown the door.

Always remember, you are looking for something great in a company, but the boss will also want something "big" (as in sales contribution) from you. There is no easy way out being in the sales, unless you are merely trying the traits out.

Sales Engineers in the IT industry are paid quite well too. They are sometimes called technical consultant, presales consultant, system engineers or simply SE. It's a role that requires a good blend of technical knowledge and sales skills.

Hi, to know the markets, people and product well, one definitely needs some experience. Would you have any advice for a fresh grad with no experience? Less a 6 month internship?

Start with either application support or sales engineering roles. You will know whether the nature of the jobs suit you or not. Truthfully, not everyone is borne to be a sales man, some can be groom, some are just not make to be one.

After a year or two, look for a company that can spearhead your career. If you strong in application (sales), you will always be in demand. Money will come when you have a strong reputation in the market. Transport allowance is nothing to a company if you can bring in revenue. Incentive is a must if you contribute to the success of the company as well.
