Anyone jobless for a long time before?

Would like to ask all parents out there, how can we as parents realistically prepare our children to survive in the current/future job market? Based on what I see, singapore job market is getting increasingly competitive and is likely to worsen in the long run. (personally i wont be surprised if our neighboring ASEAN countries catch up with us in 10-20 years time and singapore will lose its competitive edge).

I remembered when I was young, my parents always tell me study hard, otherwise next time no job. However, I think now study hard alone is insufficient, you prob need to be in some niche fields (eg computer programming, medicine etc) to survive

hi, would like some advice..

i am a male nus fass grad (2008) and worked in a statboard until i left last Sep due to conflict with my supervisor. have been applying for pte and public sector generalist jobs but have not been invited for any interview. am suspecting very tough competition for admin or generalist roles compared to stem jobs.

at my age (late 30s) some jobs like signing on army are out of the question although i would kill my own mother for the opportunity


since its coming to a year of unemployment, if you were in my shoes, would you:

a) take an engineering or IT degree from any of the pte unis (since i have 'wasted' my chance on an fass degree)

b) continue applying for jobs and hope for a miracle

c) join the blue collar workforce (eg. lorry driver)

nurture in them a habit of constant self-upgrade - encourage them to sign up for a diverse range of courses that would really add value to their portfolios, and narrow it down to some of the forecasted hot industries e.g. data analytics, IT, programming etc. Dont go down the narrow path of focusing on 1 niche, but try to make them a master of all trades. That's how we prepare our kids to exceed our mundane mainstream education system, beat the competition, or at least stay competitive.

it's precisely because fass grads have a hard time finding jobs hence the overload of supply and job applications resulting in the stiff competition for admin/generalist roles.

instead of wasting time on getting another degree, i suggest you concentrate on self-upgrading AND continue applying for jobs. Go sign yourself up for some short online courses in the hot industries (tech) and this shld give you an edge above the rest. Employers these days value a diverse skill set.

Mind hinting which stat board is that? Under which ministry? How much was your last drawn? I think u should continue to look for a similar job which u did previously. But might get a paycut.

So can i say this is your first job from 08 till till recent ?

I thinking would it be your last drawn is on the high side ? as i believe statboard salary should be not bad one plus you have been working there for quite sometime

No specialist skills at all, and my generalist skills also like not very good

Anything less than 6 mth you can remove it from your cv, i have my fair share of jobs which did not work out for me which i rather leave a gap than having to think of excuses to ******** the interviewer

a) taking another degree (regardless of disciple), is NOT going to be an automatic translation of securing another job - unless you are considering joining as a 'fresh-grad' equivalent into the new field/domain, but then why would employers consider you vs another applicant who is really a 'fresh-grad' in terms of age

b) yes to press-on and dont give up

c) yes in the interim, any available job grab first, talk later
