an expat's view...

Frankly this practice of Singapore companies demanding previous salary slips when they hire new employees is as immoral and dishonest as the candidates themselves inflating their previous salaries. In normal countries, the new salary would be pre-determined for lower-levels, or by negotiation and mutual agreement at the higher-end. Not what I hear is the local practice of X% more than what was on your last payslip...

It's not the employers business how much I earned in the previous job, instead if the employee wants X and the company is OK with that then end of story. If the company only wants to pay Y then they could negotiate. Using the pay slip as some kind of reference is not right.

By the way, may I know why they asked for latest payslips?

There's nothing wrong with asking for the latest payslip. Even government organisation asked for it. Anyway, the information you gave about your current and past employment is subjected to verification if the company chose to. This is to prevent candidates from inflating their last drawn in the hope of getting a higher offer.

I am not from HR. And I have never declared a false salary. So I have nothing to fear.

Of course, I also feel the practice of basing your offer on your last drawn is not fair to the candidates.

did you wrote the "real" last drawn in your resume? If yes, no harm showing them your payslip for verification.

If you din't, I believe your new company will do reference check before hiring. Which they will check on this too.

Hi,
Do you know if someone will confirm your existing salary? I work in HR and we constantly receive requests to confirm salary of our staff. We flatly state that this data is confidential and refuse to confirm or deny the salary details. Of course we know that our staff are overstating their salary outside.

Jasmine

(your salary is confidential and should remain that wei)

Default salaries data can be verified

Hi,
If you are planning to overstate your salary, be warned.
