Default Is it ok to turn down an accepted verbal offer?

Hi guys, would like to know if u juz accepted a verbal offer but a better one comes along, is it still ok to reject the initial accepted offer when u havent put ur pen to paper? any potential or actual repercussions for doing so?

they can't do anything to you but u will most likely not able join that company again. it is an integrity thing. if u are unlucky enough to bump into the hiring mgr or HR again somewhere else then too bad.

what if its only a matter of a few days? eg. mon accept, 3 days later reject. i guess most of the prep/paperwork has not been drafted?

The business environment here in Asia is such: if we make a commitment (verbal or written) we stick to it. The question here is not the paperwork - even if you have signed the employment contract, you could still back out of it - no company will insist that you have to give them 30 days notice if you haven't even started work!

Alas, it happened to a friend of mine. She had to serve the 1 month as an employee to avoid paying the new employer she signed up with. I personally found it counter-productive for both parties.

I guess the company is stupid - if the guy has not even started work, all he/she could do during the notice period is to sit down and collect money. Lose / lose situation for both.

The guy will then spread the words and tell his friends not to join the company.

agree with you, the company is stupid and is waste it $$$. They also waste time and $$ to process the paperwork on the new employee and make company pass and then again to process for him to tender....

while for the employee, if i was him, I will just go work and then surf net and apply job and use the photocopy machine to print my resume/cert.....No point the company will train a guy who is tendering....if happen to have interview during the notice period, just take MC and go interview, who care!!

That's the idea here - an agreement is an agreement - whether verbal or written. The purpose of a written agreement is the ease of proving it. But when we agree to something, we should keep our promise whether or not it is written down.

i will feel happy for her if she made the best and right choice.the last thing i ever want is when both parties are unhappy wif each other at the start of the agreement
