Furthermore I think you're disregarding the fact that not all Accountancy grads from Local Unis have a 100% guaranteed chance of getting in too. Thus able to get in even though you're from SIM means a great deal to some of us.

Of course it's not the ONLY route to success, but it's a decent starting point where many dream about.

Lastly, you can't compare IB to careers in Accountancy. Its akin to comparing apples and oranges. However, again it's not impossible. Go do a quick search on LinkedIn and you can see that there are SIM students who managed to venture into IB. So it's definitely possible. But what they had sacrificed and fought for to achieve that you would have to ask them yourself.

It's evident from the JD of most jobs esp for graduate programmes. In that case, you even need a minimum of 2nd upper from local unis to be qualified for it.

The fact is that in every top/popular jobs, there will be tons of applications from all the reputable unis and private or SIM degree holders will be in a disadvantage position for sure.

Rather than trying to aim for top companies, make do with a reasonable coy and gain valuable experience. Don't fall for the trap of aiming too high and be jobless for extended period.
With all due respect, i've been in a hedge fund MO, a bulge bracket MO and currently in mid tier IB FO. And I'm a uol graduate. The way you speak, just shows that you are not even in any of the top companies.

Default Choosing my degree

Hi everyone, I just completed my year 1 under SIM-UOL EMFSS program and I am an international student. My major is currently Economics and Finance. I am having a thought of changing my major to BsC Banking and Finance in year 2 instead of pursuing BsC Economics and Finance. I am still confused, like about the career prospects of these two majors, which major is more practical to pursue, or better to apply in real life work etc. Can anyone give me any advices? Thanks in advance.

Agreed. Your uni results, your passion and how well-read you are will be the things landing you in the top companies. Just to justify, I graduated in 2015 with second uppers, went to pursue a Masters in UK and now working in one of the Top 3 IBs. Please do not think that it could be that my masters which got me in, I do have colleagues from UOL as well and they got in without a masters degree.

It goes to show that everything is possible. So please have faith and do work hard.

Hi everyone, so i have been applying for audit positions from big 4 and other mid-tier firms. No prior work experience or internships for the past 3 years (couldn't secure one in year 2). I've been waiting for replies, but callback rates are really poor (one in fact, out of the 20+ applications).

My final year grade & overall classification will only be out in a month. Grades are not poor, should be able to attain 2:1 at least.

Are the hr hesitant to invite me for an interview because my results aren't out yet?

SIM students are regularly rejected by the Big 4, even the ones with FCH. No matter how desperate for manpower they are, they'd rather take local uni students or even matured candidates from Malaysian Big 4 as new audit associates. This is why entering as fresh grad from SIM is a big deal.

This does not apply just to Big 4 but also large MNCs, not to mention banking.

I graduated in 2012 but managed to join a global MNC in early 2016 as an experienced hired. This MNC is always in the top 10 emloyers together with facebook and google etc.

In 2012, my choices were really limited. Civil service, big 4 and banks did not offer me a role.

I am now earning much more than those in civil service, banks and big 4 within the field I am in.

Can you elaborate on your achievement?
Age? How many years of working experience do you in total? How much are you earning now?
If you compare to other SIM peers, do you think it is a norm that everyone or most of you have achieved equal or more than you?
