Advantages of public tech - protection against foreign talents, protection against ageism. I still get to code with minimal project management. So I do what I like, with a decent salary, good work life balance, good job stability.

The advantages of public tech appear in the later half of career, I'm not worried of getting retrenched at 50.

Some things to consider. Career lifetime is a long time, plan strategically.
You stay in sane company for 13 years or seconded around? Can't imagine staying more than 4 years in a company, esp for tech sector and when one is still young (late 20s/30s).

Yes same place.

Internal transfers help me gain knowledge and try new things. There's this notion that public is boring and slow and stagnant...that's not true. I enjoyed my years here and learnt a lot.

I'm just saying don't discount public tech, you can have a great career, great work life balance, recession protection, more than decent pay and code everyday.

Last time is last time. Now is now. Last when u still young, life good for you. Doesnt mean now it will be good for young ones. Now u old and promoted several times already, still life is good for you. Doesnt mean people at the bottom level also good life. It could be that you are at a higher level thats why life's good. Considered that before?

Name the agencies and departments.

Unbelievable otherwise.

Techie in public sector is someone who does staff work, don't be fooled by the "coder" in earlier comments.

Up to you, if you don't want to believe.

Again the notion that public sector just does staff work is an old one. Yes I do staff work too, that's part of the job, but I do have the luxury to code too.

If you work in the private sector, at architect level, you won't code much, but if you are smart about things, you still can code. Same for public sector.

recession protection and great pay is true. great work life balance, this one not true across the board in public service. many departments are short handed and overstretched. i guess you are lucky to be in a comfortable position but please don't go around sharing the notion that this is to be expected (unless you are speaking for your own dept/agency) because a lot of departments and agencies are being worked to the bone especially with covid demands these days. otherwise new hires will get a cultural shock when they end up in a department or org where the WLB is way off from expectations.

Isn't the progression in public sector kinda bad compared to private though?
