I just got offered $8.5k as a senior lecturer. I have 12 years in business development and this is a pretty big pay cut (less 20%) but i am close to 40, have an MBA, and would like to have a 9-5 job for a change. i pretty much missed my son growing up and would like to reclaim it. the instability in the corporate world (so many around me have been re-trenched) that comes with age also worries me.

Is this a decent package? or should I re-negotiate? - i am inclined to accept as is but was wondering if i am asking for too much if i do.

Avoid it. As a senior lecturer you will be required to teach, do admin work, take students to SOTs and pretty much have no free time. You will be asked to attend meetings in evenings and sometimes even on saturdays.

You can always say no to doing all this but it will mean that someone else will do it and come appraisal you will get a very poor grade. You will be forced to work hard or else your juniors will take over you.

Take it!

If you perform well, your PB will more than make up for it.

Your priority is your family. Workload differ from poly to poly so don't get swayed by negative comments.

You have missed 2 important points. One is "IF". And it is a big IF in a poly. The second is not to weigh the pros and cons evenly and telling the poster to only look at the positives.

How long have you been working in a poly?1 yr ? 2 yr ? 4 yr ? 7 yr ? 10 yr ?
