Maybe before GFC. These days the gap in total package is smaller or non-existent because of the steady bonuses in local banks.

Not that local banks bonuses got better, but investment banks' bonuses got worst after the GFC. U.S govt bailouts put them under scrutiny and affected their bonus scheme.
