WoWOwoOw... what about Keppel Shipyard?

anyway since you're at Kfel, like to ask some questions too.

how's the progression there? in terms of salary and promotion.

And Maybe I should post my question here instead of the Education Section.

Anyone can pls give some advises?

1. Which degree program has better career opportunity and less limitation in the marine industry? and why?

a. Bsc in Marine Engineering
b. Bsc in Naval Architecture
c. Bsc in Offshore Engineering

2. Will there be limitation if one choses Marine Engineering? in terms of not able to participate in rig design, work on rig, or get into design office?

Really appreciate any advises.

Thank you all.

Progression is really slow. Do you have 2nd Upper/1st Class Honours from NUS/NTU/Foreign Uni? If not, kiss your progression away. You will be stuck with stagnant pay for years. Only if you have good grades can you climb the corporate ladder fast. If you have good grades, within a year you will be promoted. No questions asked.

1. DO NOT JOIN THE MARINE INDUSTRY. You have been tricked by the glamour. Ask your seniors, most of them are quitting once their bond is finished. There are many many people throwing in their towels as the environment there sucks. You are expected to work from 7.30 to 4.30, normally 8.30pm with $8/h as OT. You are better off taking a lower 8-5 pay and doing tuition if you are hard up. The people there are not any better, trust me.

2. It's all dependent on your grades not what you take.

The degree that you choose does not really matter. What matters more is how well will you do for your degree, say 1st Class Honours ? That is the step that will play a factor in determining your first job. Subsequently, your career progression and limitations will depend more on your ability, relevant experience and connections rather than your degree. Of course, if you managed to secure a 1st Class Honours, it can help you to get into a management trainee or associate programme and your career progression may be faster.

There are a lot of other companies besides shipyards that are involved in drilling rigs. If you study marine engineering, you are probably limiting yourself to be hired by the shipyards or marine industry only. It's less likely for oil and gas companies to hire a marine engineering graduate. For that versatility, I would choose offshore engineering followed by naval architecture. Shipyards would have no problem in hiring people from the three different degree programmes for their fresh graduates.

Whether you work in the design office or on the rig itself depends on the position that you are applying for rather than your degree. Say if you apply to be a design engineer, you will definitely be more involved in the design. Now contrast this with that of a production or a field engineer.

Wow, thank you all for these invaluable advises.

I will keep them in mind.

However, sadly, I do not have the luxury to choose the uni that I'll like to study in as my family are not doing well and my grades aren't too fantastic.

I believe u guys can get it....

Therefore I'm making the best out of the situation

As mentioned above, about management trainee... I heard that all graduates are being put under that scheme in Keppel.. is it true?

I know KeppelGroup Scholars are invested heavily and groomed to be top men..
What about Keppelom Scholar? are they like farmers? (farmer scholars)

What is the minimum honours required to enter the big M&O companies (i.e. Kfels, Sembcorp, FMC)?
Really need 2nd upper and above?
Mech engine undergrad here.

FMC is not an Offshore and Marine company. It's an upstream oil and gas company dealing mainly with subsea stuff. I believe Keppel and Sembcorp Marine will take Engineering graduates of any class of honours in. The difference lies in their starting pay.
