Is there generally a salary difference between social ministries like MSF and MCCY and economic ministries like MTI? Also, is there usually a salary difference between divisions in a ministry?

I am not the original poster, but I know what he or she was referring to. Please search the straits times article “Firms hit by Covid-19 should take other measures before resorting to pay cuts, retrenchments: National Wages Council”. Specifically, the following paragraph “ The Government has accepted the NWC recommendations. Mr Kam said that discussions on pay are ongoing between the Public Service Division and public sector unions, and they are working towards the regular timeline of announcing the decisions and mid-year annual variable components in June“.

It seems like a few stat boards have announced pay freeze/cut. Generally, it seems like only the management staff are getting heftier pay cut. Let’s not waste time alleging fake news here. You should be informed of the pay revision in the coming weeks.

Hi,

An undergrad here. Anybody knows if having a masters degree would give u a higher starting pay or better progression route? Weighing the pros and cons of taking a masters as it costs 30k and takes 1 more year for me to complete. Thinking of joining a ministry doing policy work and the masters is in public policy

Relax. It is likely to be 0 mid year bonus.

If the cut goes deeper, MI is 0 too.

Reducing the current basic pay is tier 3. This may not happen at all (not mathematically zero though, just to quell arguments).

So, fingers crossed, just the first cut.

dont bother with the Masters. let me explain why below...

- u dun even know what class of honours u gonna graduate with, nowadays competition to enter Civil Service (CS) is dam intense. if u have only a pass degree, high chance u'll enter some low / sh1t tier M / SB, or maybe no chance to enter CS but only the pte sector.

- if the above rly happens to u, i rather u pursue a part-time Masters after getting your a55 INTO the CS. or at least ask for sponsorship / subsidies from your M / SB after joining them

- most of the advertised vacancies on CAREERS@GOV require just a degree

in short, focus on getting at least a second-upper from NUS / NTU / SMU (if u are even from any of these 3 unis to begin with) first. this is the most important part.

Hi on track for a 2:1 in my bachelor's degree. Would the class of honours of the masters affect the CEP significantly as well?

Would having a masters put me into a higher CEP when joining as a fresh grad?

nope. if the job requires a degree, they will base on ur degree that u have. its the same as applying for a diploma level position with a degree. they will base on your diploma and also give u diploma level salary.
