It’s exciting to know that we can retire in 5 years time.
If you’re willing to downgrade then no problem. Your desire to relax and retire early at 55 must be greater than worrying about what others think of you downgrading. Anyway you live your own life. Do what makes you happy. Why care about face or what other people think of you.

Downgrading is no problem at all. Many people downgrade to fund their retirement. There are those who sell their landed properties and buy HDB flats to retire.

For example they sell their landed properties for $3 mil. Then buy a HDB flat for $500k. They have $2.5 mil to travel and enjoy life. No need to worry at all.

I know of a high flyer friend in the corporate sector who sold his landed property, made a good profit from the sale and downgraded to a condominium apartment. He is now retired and focuses his life on doing charity work for free and improved on his health. He is debt free. I’ve never seen him happier and healthier. He retired in his mid 40s. Super high achiever in Singapore.

Even with those expenses, how do you (the guy) have so little savings with that salary? Was it a recent increment? I'm turning 28 in a few months making slightly over $10k/mth and I have 160k NAV in investments. My expenses are about 1-1.5k/mth

definitely did not start out this way. my first salary at 27 was $60k/annum.
i've been giving parental allowance of >$1k since the start.
Plus I had my education loan to repay when i first started ($28k) +($40k for masters to family members).

But i take your point. Need to earn more to catch up then.

Anyone feels like the economy reopening is not worth it? Feels like the free flow of FTs from covid infected countries are leading to a new covid outbreak in Singapore
