Gosh what horrendous grammar for someone who claims to be an AP with a PhD.

You must be from China. Asst Prof in china has to downgrade to become postdoc in Singapore or vice versa.

This is like the whole foreign talent debate. Singaporeans loathe foreign talent as they compete for your jobs and ask for less. With phds they are singaporeans who ask for the same salary, but do twice the work because they are either more capable, smarter, or just spend more time working and less time COMPLAINING.. And you loathe them.

If you guys continue at this rate, your economic miracle is going to end. The recession is coming. Better find time to upgrade or you will be made redundant.
Having a phD doesn't mean that person will be particularly good at his job. It really depends what job it is. I can tell you that I have been in R&D stat board and that I met a lot of phDs. Some are really smart and versatile. But for every one like tht, there are equal number who are lard assss, can't work long hours, and basically are just 'powerpoint' specialists. I know phDs who have no inkling of the problems faced by industry and totally out of depth in th real world, even though they may have solved lots of pdes in order to get their paper. So it really depends on the person. phD just means they spent a few years studying and doing research.
Also, may I add, when I moved to the industry, i have hired out of job phD holders. For 3-4k only. And I found working with them tedious. They tend to fall bck on their phDs, and there is a certain ego there that stops them from getting their hands dirty. For eg, we needed to test comms and didn't have a proper serial port, so I asked this phD to go make one quickly (check the pin connections and solder). He didn't really look happy doing it, and later one of my engineers checked (vietnam engineer 3k salary), the pins where soldered all wrong. This is 'phD'.

PhD is valued only if you are in a relevant industry. PhD in Engineering has no value if you actually tried to be a marketing manager.

But Phd gives u an edge to adapt quickly. Ur Phd will help bcus it taught u one skill most people dont have ----i.e., How to SEEK KNOWLEDGE
Anyone who is good and can pickup skills fast can rise in their job fast. PhD does not mean you can pick up things fast. Some soft skills are very hard to pick up after you are past a certain age. Actually PhDs are very specialized and lack diversity and broadbased knowledge typical middle mangers will need.

MSc research is not so important. But still MSc is more of a specialization than BSc.
Agree... and you will be under alot of pressure if you are drawing alot of salary while the diploma guy is learning faster than you.

I think the best scenario is where the organisation sponsor the employee for the PhD while at the same time paying him his monthly salary + annual bonuses + annual increment. Upon the completion of the PhD, the employee will have a cushy job and an enhanced career track awaiting him. But I guess only civil service offers such an opportunity. It comes with a 8 year bond by the way.
