Can I ask what the reasons are for people wanting to leave but not choosing to?
Golden handcuffs. End of the day you get paid well for pushing paper.

Or tips to fake confidence when getting yelled at? I have a partner that nothing I do is right.

She called and yelled at me yesterday and I had to hang up the phone on her because I was going to start crying.

I’m just nervous how to act in person now.

He undermines everything I do/say and as a new lawyer I don’t have a lot of confidence on what to say back to her .

What are some good responses that are still professional to say to an angry partner ?

I don’t have experience getting yelled at by people in law school. This is my first job since graduation.

Also is it normal to get yelled at? If so, then I may not switch to another firm. I will just quit practice for good.
It's not normal. You are just unlucky to have a toxic boss. Change firms and this time do your due diligence on how the firm culture/your boss is like before joining.

(And don't take the responses on this forum as representative because usually only unhappy people will come onto this forum to vent. People who are happy with their bosses won't bother to post about it.)

Which firm is this? Big4 and certain small law firms are notorious for having toxic partners.

Oh well, even change firm may also be like that. It is quite common to have bosses who shout and become monsters toward their staff. Even as SA level to Juniors, bullying is quite common especially in Big 4. Haven’t we heard what Lawsoc President had wanted to change the culture?

Plus, it is quite common for a 3-5 pqe to have changed 3 firms already.

In any case, I would just leave practice. There are better ways to make money without getting my mental health suffered.

Mmmm I agree.

How am I supposed to draft interview notes for my partner on tips for young lawyers when I have not been called to the Bar?

Default Fish bowl?

Instead of posting here on this forum without proper threads/replies/likes etc. Why don’t we all just use the fish bowl app? US/London lawyers use it exactly like what we are doing here but better interface, etc. There is a singapore law thread but none of us uses it!

Many aspiring law undergraduates or Part A/B candidates always think that academics is very important in practice but in reality, it plays a secondary role.

There are two things you need to have for practice:

1. Client Management - You have to manage clients' expectations, learn to be firm with clients (setting boundaries) and always remember, collect fees beforehand. Many clients will request you to do many but "act blur" when its payment time. Admittedly, easier said than done and even some partners still fail at it, given that Singaporeans are the non-confrontational type.

2. Thick Skin - Especially for litigation. Prepare to get scolded by the judiciary if you can't meet timelines (sometimes at no fault of your own). Also, by demanding clients who think they own you just because they paid a paltry deposit.

If you can master these two things, you can survive in practice. If not, good luck.
