What do you foresee yourself doing, or want to do?

Are you happy with doing 'low level' work? If so, go to a small firm that has a boss who's willing to take you in on a profit-sharing basis in a couple years time. I have some friends pulling in pretty good remuneration doing man-in-the-street work in small firms.

If you want to do sexier work, apply to the bigger firms. You may get docked one or two years though, especially the Big 4s, but in the grander scheme of things this should be palatable.

The most important thing is not to stay in crap firms that are exploitative. Say what you want about the merciless hours of Big 4s/large firms, at least your experience and exit options are rather valuable.

The worst are the firms that work you to the bone, pay you like crap, and leave you with a very unmarketable profile for which no recruiter will even DM you on LinkedIn. Unfortunately, and most predictably, these are the small-mid sized firms, run by boomers like your typical SME.

Local firms are typically dominated by local grads. Partners are generally from NUS. So they will naturally take in juniors from same university etc.

International firms are dominated by foreign grads including delisted universities. Most partners in these firms are grads from delisted universities or even universities that have never ever been a scheduled university.

These partners generally prefer foreign grads (and to some of the posters here, rude awakening… grads from the delisted universities especially those who have obtained a FCH).

So say whatever you want, at the end of the day, the market is not going to care about a few disgruntled local grads whining away in this forum.

Lol. So if you want to be in big four, no brainer, go NUS get your 2:1 and above.
If you want international firms, the shortest path to it is to go overseas (or if you are a foreign delisted grad with FCH your chance is so much higher, because the international partners (who make the hiring decisions) are from these universities.

The competition to get into these top UK firms, fighting tooth and nail with local Brits and other high-calibre overseas law students from Ghana, Nigeria, and other parts of the Commonwealth, just to land a slot in one of the vacation scheme assessment centres, and for a chance at a TC, is extremely tough.

Disabuse yourself of the fantasy that international law firms will all suddenly prostrate before you and roll out the red carpet just because you're studying in one of the Russell Group or Red Brick (or lower tier) unis that some of their partners studied in.

Oh and if you're hoping to coast in as a sympathy / diversity hire, I've got bad news for u - they actually prefer black and brown BAME for diversity points, not yellow-skinned East Asians.

You overseas grads make it sound so easy. Imagine framing your second rate uni as a magical key opening doors to all firms. Yes I'm sure they'll bow before the splendor of your Notts or KCL LLB. Seriously delusional and also lacking in critical thinking. Your mental faculties are truly second rate.

The fact that you don't realize what the truly easiest way is to international firms - working in a top Big 4 team before lateralling into one of the international firms here, as so many of my NUS and SMU peers have done, is telling that most delisted grads are here spouting rubbish.
