"A 56-year-old man was on Monday (Jun 21) sentenced to four years and six months' jail for committing incest. He had sex with his now 32-year-old daughter at her home on May 17, 2019, the court heard. The man pleaded guilty to one count of incest and one count of attempted incest. He was also sentenced to an additional 592 days' imprisonment for breaching the remission order."

Curious, can someone explain why the daughter was not charged as well since It takes two hands to clap? Gender inequality?

You can, but the roles are few and far between if any.

Well there’s definitely something wrong when legal salaries in other financial centres have increased substantially in the past 10 years, whereas Singapore’s local firms have remained stagnant. Are Singapore law firms losing relevance?

I know you think you’re onto something but… you’re not. Try harder.

From personal experience, it's not a requirement, but companies are like people, they want the best deal.. why pay an unqualified (to the bar) person when they can get a bar-called lawyer for around the same price. A bar-called lawyer may not be better, but in the eyes of the company, they will "understand" more about possible legal issues (litigation etc).

OP here. Since you’re apparently so daft you need help figuring out that what I meant by ‘cannot be right’ is a topic starter, I shall gracefully unpack some of the elements for you.

General employment practice is that salaries will be adjusted EOY to account for inflation and/or other factors. Although these are not typically big increases, it is not insignificant. To have the SAME salary back in 2010 as it does in 2021, is pretty self-explanatory and evidence to the poor salary structure within the legal industry.

Now what is even more problematic is that junior staffers and even some salaried seniors in the legal industry are apathetic to this. Perhaps jaded and rightfully so because the system is so tilted in favour of those that are in power.

This leads to why this platform with anonymity is beneficial to educating and discussing the how and the why.

So what can be done about this and do you think the wage range for NQ and above would increase after 2023 once the new practice training regimes begin?

I dunno why yall talking like mcm civil servants, all these woolly notions of salary must go up just cos some time has passed, must beat inflation, etc. Like apropos of nothing, and simply by virtue of being an employee, can talk about salary in the abstract, divorced from any value it is supposed to be commensurate with

Yall forgetting you sell legal services. Sell being the operative word, if not each one of you got charge out rate and do time sheets for what

Not a single post has addressed the value contributed point. So I'll repeat it - in this day and age, wtf does a lawyer do to justify the salary they draw. Why is the argument for more, and not less. Why isn't NQ pay $2,500

Doubt it would increase unless there is a huge shock to the system, eg more premium foreign firms willing to take on trainees at international rates or an upstart firm willing to challenge the status quo like a local equivalent or K&E
