he probably means CC is more reluctant to take fresh grads from SMU vis-a-vis NUS or UK schools, which is probably true.

Some poster above said it correctly. The layman prestige about lawyers is a holdover from our parent's time in the 80s when lawyering was seen as a prestigious secure job.

Make no mistake we are about as prestigious as accountants now. Nothing against the latter.


If u joined for the prestige be prepared to be sorely disappointed. I graduated from a local law faculty and we had this dumb "elite" law med sports tournament...what a joke man! The law students actually believed they were of equal standing and prestige as the future doctors. How many of them realized that they would become nothing more than client mouthpieces and paper pushers when they graduated I wonder?

Thank you. I was the poster who made that comment. And like you said, I've always felt that this idea that law is prestigious came from when it was prestigious, secure and well paying, which was in our parent's generation.

Times have changed. I don't want to be boosting fiance in particular. But take this anecdote from my friends.

M&A is where the big money is. You have the bankers staying late till 8pm to analyze and execute the billion dollar buy out. The deal is done, the bankers go for drinks, they pat themselves on the back with good analysis and a lucrative move to pocket millions.

AFTER 8pm, the lawyers stay till 3am to prepare the contracts as requested by the bankers.

When I heard this story, I knew myself that I see so prestige in that kind of work. Noble, yes. Prestige, not really.

Correction - I see NO prestige

Law is hell of a dog job, don't do it. There is nothing noble or prestigious about it.

You're the paper boy of bankers, criminals, corporations etc: it is a really shitty job.

If i may add to that, what's worse? A tough law school where school work actually sucks your social life away while your business and computer engineering friends are chiling ( until the finals looms at least) . And congrats for paying more for the law degree than the business or engineering degree.

If there are any prospective law students out there reading this forum, my advice is think THRICE
Ask yourself if you truly knows what the profession does. If you truly interested in the academic study of law. I always believe there is a simple economic reason why there isn't more criminal or family lawyers. Because you cannot earn enough fees to pay yourself for your work. There isn't enough paying clients and thecost of running a community law focused practice is relatively too high.

I work in finance, believe it or not, and lawyers have widely been acknowledged to be the paper pushers.

What's worse, my friends in law are overworked and underpaid. I mean a measly 2k for trainee life? What a joke, IBs pay base rate.
