Overseas, NUS > SMU of course. SMU reputation overseas is that of a degree mill. You'd be better off doing a law degree at RMIT if you wanna go overseas.

Locally speaking, you need to understand that NUS has a whole lot more history than SMU.... and unfortunately, that means a prevalence of ' NUS-old-boys'-club' mentality. There are still partners around who only take on NUS grads.
This is not a comment on the actual abilities of an NUS grad vs an SMU grad, simply that there are a lot of old school people in the industry who continue to believe in only their alma mata. You can tell lah, if you look at their teams/past trainees & assocs.

If you wanna work overseas, even a delisted UK uni or GO8 Aussie uni would be better than NUS/ SMU. NUS has only been around for 41 years, SMU like ah boy about to enter army liddat. Nowhere near enough time for alumni to break into partnerships at London/NY firms.
There's a reason why many JC grads opt for overseas unis over NUS/ SMU, and it ain't because they couldn't make the cut locally.

I do think the NUS preference IN SINGAPORE is about right. They know the ins and outs of civil procedure and Singapore cases.
If you are in an international firm, they will likely work with the laws of another jurisdiction.
