I agree totally on that. But everyone has the same mindset as you where they work hard for what they want, hoping that they will escape that lousy role of 5k pay at the company lol. I guess this is life...

I started off as a mech engineer, 2nd upp fron NUS. My one and only employer is a big stat board. Within 3 yrs of work, I took up a part time MSc with NUS. After securing the MSc, I was awarded a scholarship to pursue another MSc. (systems engineering) in the US. This time, it was full time studying with full salary and tuition paid for, some more with allowance for food and lodging. Of course I had to sign on a bond.

Now I am a technical manager leading a team of engineers. Pay wise around $200k. With wife earning another $150k, we can live comfortably, but still cannot compare with those in finance line or other professions like doctors and lawyers.

Work wise, there is quite good work life balance with the occasional high stress all nighter kind of project work. I would be lying if I say I did not ever consider changing my line of work. But after seeing some friends and colleagues who job hopped and never seem to settle, I thought I better stay on.

The stat board has been my only employer for 30 yrs, I can't say it is a bad employer. Otherwise I wouldn't last this long.

In every company there are limited management positions. Companies recognized that and most have created technical career ladder to retain their technical staff. For my stat board, our engineers can therefore progress along this ladder. You start off as engineer, move on to senior engineer, principal engineer and senior principal engineer. Senior PE salary overlaps that of Tech. Manager

What's wrong with being earning 5k/mth? At least it is comfortable if you spend within your means. Not everyone can be rich and successful, take a look at reality before setting your expectations and ambitions. It is good to aim big but what is the possibility you achieving that? Just do your work well and live a decent life would suffice.

there is nothing wrong earning 5k/mth. I'm just stating my POV as most of them are thinking 5k is not enff to survive in singapore. if everyone has the same mindset as you then no one will be comparing finance vs engineering alr. no one will be complaining abt what the gov is doing. well, everyone has diff mindset, you continue with ur work and live a decent life while we will continue to aim high.
