He's right about the industry, but if you read other parts of his blog, he's into forex trading.

Another fool to be conned by the "forex experts" who make a living teaching how you can "earn millions trading".

I want to quit - R&D Engineer
Since i graduated from university, i have been working in Research & Development environment for 7.5 years. Our job is to design electronics product for customer, which involves electronics/electrical, mechanical, software, firmware designs.

However i must say that i want to quit this job and i have planned for it.

Yes! i am a quitter, somebody will says that i am loser, or anything else, but i just don't care about them!

So, why i do not want to stay in this industry until i retire? there are tonnes of reasons below:



Future prospect of Electronics Industry: As an ODM/OEM, we are not at the top of the food chain. These electronics products are getting cheaper every year, and our customers requests for cheaper price every year! so the revenue come down but cost goes up every year, like manpower cost, material cost, rental, etc. What would be happening is the profit margin is squeezed every year, and in the end.... NO BUSINESS.

Competitiveness: Electronics product design in Singapore has NO COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE over other countries, especially China. China company operating at ultra low cost, they are enthusiastic, aggressive, and creative. How about china's product quality? I can say no worst than ours! We can't even compete with China, don't mentioned competitors from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Europe.

Working Culture: Singapore has the worst working culture in the world. Many of the people are not actually working efficiently. People only care about those things that managers can see, those things which affect their KPI, and those KPI which determines their annual bonus and increment. In the end, products looks good in the outer, and all shits inside, buggy, problematic, not user friendly, project overrun, etc.

Office Politics: I really disgusted by all these office politics, gossips, etc. SICK! they are really energy vampire.

Any Happy Engineer Out There: If you are working in engineering company, just look around and see, are there any engineers who are happy? i mean really happy from the heart, not those "socially happy". We are dealing with all things without conscious minds, cold dead things like computer, components, pcb, plastics. This is not good for us as a HUMAN BEING.

Cost Centre: Being an engineer is part of the cost, we are located at cost center. People expect pay rise every year, but the reality is the purpose of company is to minimize cost, so our pay will be limited. You can earn a living, but cannot fly.

Long Working Hour (STUPID!!!): In US, if an employee work late, he/she will be regarded as not efficient; But in Singapore, it is totally different: If you work late, you are good engineer, if you go home on time, you will be labelled as not a good engineer, not a team player, lazy people. Even my manger told me that R&D cannot operate by having engineer go back on time. I don't care a **** about them, my family is most important to me!

Retrenchment: Even we work long hour, good relationship with managers, team players, good politics player, but in the end we are still subjected to pay freeze, pay cut, and retrenchment, whenever something bad in economy and export to western countries. I DON'T WANT TO GET RETRENCHED WHEN I REACH 40S AND WHEN MY CHILDREN GROWING UP!

Pitiful pay rise and bonus: It is common that every year we just "PRAY" for bonus and increment from boss. Quite bad, we place our hope on other peoples which our objective an interests are not aligned

Of course i have already planned by way out, and working hard for it.

True story! i am also an R&D engineer in the oem industry, pay like **** (up to 35%) lower than the average project engineer and somemore much more technical demanding, sometimes i wonder wtf? everyone so pro meh

i think everyone is like quitting their jobs nowadays... my good frd jsut tendered to go into own business after thinking bout quitting for 4 yrs! and when he did so, we were like finally!!
