On what basis do you "promise" your classmate he will get a job in 6 months if he keeps applying? Are you the CEO for Citibank or HSBC? If not, don't just give empty slogans even if you are lucky enough to join a bank.
Totally agreed! unless if you have network then dont bother to believe all this crap. my friend got a merit for her degree but because it was a private degree, she didnt even manage to get an interview. wherelse her another friend whom graduated from local uni with a 3rd class can get an interview and eventually been offerred. I do have friends in banking but doing jobs like calling up people to do investments, selling insurance etc. in field like sales you will have lots of private uni grads.

It's never too late. Knuckle down and keep hustling. Start from a contract job in ops if you have to.

If you are positive and persistence, apply widely and take opportunity to learn when someone offers it to you. Never be swayed by any of your senior who claimed that is possible to get one within a 6-month period or even 1-year. It's simply unrealistic in the light of present market condition. It's not the lack of efforts on your part but the sheer numbers of well-qualified applicants that all banks have been receiving lately. Why not also consider other industries?

Be thankful for any offer. They are people I know coming from good Aussie unis{on campus ok) struggling just to get a decent offer.

Not really thinking of looking to work in banks due to the competition level but rather thinking of doing an internship first at a auditing firm be it big 4 (if iam really lucky enough and the stars are all aligned) or other firms to gain some experience but iam still worried about my future after seeing all those comments made

I do not recommend you to apply to Big4 for due to severe competition from local undergrads. Unless you have strong network, the four firms have no shortage of suitable applicants. In this current climate these firms can afford to pick and choose who they want to groom. I would suggest you look at the mid-tier and smaller firms with the target of getting one of them to sponsor you for the SQP foundation program. This suggestion is more realistic due to the changes in the employment situation.

+1.

All Big4s will always choose local grads first. Deloitte was the only one who sometimes let in private grads at lower non-exec grades, but now with the employment market so bad, I think they have more than enough local grads willing to take up the lower level jobs as well.
