sembcorp offers $575 as shift allowance. Plus $25 per night night for a total of approx $755. Its pathetic, I must admit. There have been efforts to raise the allowance but the company is rather adverse about implementing the increments. There are no laundry allowance but the company engages a laundromat to wash employees' uniforms. Increment among the various business units (eg power plants, water treatment etc) is not uniform because sembcorp does bias in favour to the power plant ppl abit as power plants are the money makers, hence power plant technicians get higher increment as compared to the rest. Unfortunately, that will not remain the same for long as more power plants are being built on Jurong Island and these new companies will take increasing shares in the energy market. Your starting package depends in part on interview performance and (errm.. company connections). I have heard abt ppl with no prior experience in boiler operations getting >$2500 in basic.

I would like to dispense some advice here. I'm from the oil and gas industry, but not going to say where. I'm a degree holder myself, so what I'm gonna say is based on what I've seen over the years I've been in this industry.
For those of you considering whether or not to go to university before joining the oil and gas industry, my advice is - if you can and are able to enter university, go for it before coming to the oil and gas industry.
Why?
If you join with a ITE/diploma, you start off as a process technician. It takes at least 10 years (if you are really really good) for you to get to the highest grade of technician. From there, you can move on to become shift leader (fastest one I've seen is about 15 yrs of experience) and eventually maybe move out of Operations and go into other departments (I saw some of you mentioned safety officer; trainers etc and yes, indeed, those people I've seen are at least 50 yrs old).
If you go on to get a degree before you join, you will be able to start off at a much higher level in other departments such as process engineering (the job level is equivalent to shift leaders fyi). And as a graduate, you have a lot more exposure vs someone in the the shift team. That translate to more opportunities.
Pros of joining as a ITE/Diploma holder -
a) you start work earlier and earn money earlier.
b) your starting pay is generally much higher than most other industry (40-45k/annum is considered high for most diploma/ ITE grads)
Cons
a) you will lack the exposure compared to a graduate and most likely not be able to go as far as a graduate in terms of career progression.
b) point a) above means you have a ceiling on your income (the most senior process technicians are paid about 100k/annum including allowances, bonuses and OT pays but that is about it. If you are satisfied with it, I guess it's ok.)
However, one thing to note though is that you might not be able to make it into the oil and gas industry if you were to pursue a degree because competition is fierce. So in the end, it's a difficult choice to make. So whatever choice you do make, stay true to it and work hard.
I hope I didn't complicate matters for those of you who want to join this industry.
