So I guess the whole application process for MINDEF could be 6 months from date of application to contract signing

This is about right, looking at first assessment for those whom went for SID test.
Security assessment should be about 1-2 months.

But overall timeline is around 4-6 months , for expectation on the first assessment as a starting point. So for those take at July for example, you can expect Jan thereabout for your answer.

For those in August, maybe in Feb.

And yes, it is difficult , in fact very difficult to get in. It is easy to get out, but what you gonna do outside as the skills transfer might not be very relevant and there are things you cannot share as you had signed some documents.

DYDD, choose wisely when offered, try to ask for a higher pay.

IMO if you do get offered in SID, better think very carefully about the package they are offering, especially the salary. This is even more critical for fresh school leavers without prior working experience. Reason I'm saying is that once you get in, and if the work and conditions/environment eventually start to beat/wear you down, at least a good salary will motivate and keep you going. The risk is once you leave, you might not have alot of transferable skills that will make you attractive to employers outside. Considering the nature of this employment, likely you won't have alot of bargaining chips, unless you are a highly prized asset to the organisation due to some highly specialised knowledge/skills, etc. So think over and over again, look carefully at the compensation package, before you sign, especially for those without prior work experience to back you up, this could be a sure way to mess the rest of your life up should you find dissatisfaction later on.

It has been 2.5 months after the interview without hearing anything for me, should I just be waiting for the rejection email?

Generally if you had only taken tests and no interviews, and been waiting for a month or more since your last test, very high chance you are already in rejection pool and sitting there till eventually new hires are confirmed and you will then be purged from the list and receive rejection notification. But if you had attended and cleared interviews, you might be waiting for security vetting/clearance which may take up to 3months.

Once you get in, better stay in and don't try to leave. Coz once you come out, might be difficult to get other jobs coz likely alot of questions will be asked by prospective employers as to the reason why you left. They will be naturally be inclined to think that the reason is probably due to work performance or discipline issues.
