Relax why you so worked up? It's because of people like you Singapore has so little tech talent. I have worked in 2 tech companies for about 3 years now and I've met some people that has non tech degree doing tech role now so I'm not surprised if OP is as well

FCH don't mean much without actual skills and experience to back you though. For tech companies I mean

not the person who wrote that but got to admit stuff like "I have FCH so I deserve high compensation" is going to rub people the wrong way. very elitist thinking that will get you in trouble in the workplace, just like some of the FCH I see who think too highly of their paper qualifications.

I also didn't write that comment about the 5% hence high compensation ****. I only included the FCH cuz the companies I considering do look at degree class. I dare to use my account to type

Obviously people with non tech degree can go into tech. Its all about this threadstarter's attitude. Seriously cant you tell from the content of his posts?
1. FCH therefore deserves high paying job
2. Go into tech because tech companies pay highly
Are these the right reasons for going into tech? So eg. Lets say next year the construction business exploded with lucrative pay etc, and tech people are treated as cost centers and neglected in the corporate chain again, would this guy also be the first to say he want to get into construction? Follow where the money is, amiright?
Jokers.

Realistically speaking, your seniors in NTU other than CS and Double Degrees, none of the other Engineering degrees hit 5k in the 75th percentile for their starting salary.
For private sectors, unless you do exceptionally well for the technical assessments its hard to justify for your starting salary since your peers across engineering degrees are willing to accept it lesser.
But like the other commenters suggested, public sector and academia looks heavily on your education cert so they are likely to offer you higher than 5k. Actually banks also look at your cert, so you could likely get offered more than 5k in tech for FCH.
There are also high paying startups in tech like quant and forex stuffs. If you do well its likely you can also hit 10k monthly salary in a short 1-2 years. I have a peer who went into this field. Sounds nice but heard that its much more stressful than SWE.
Also the 13th month package and bonuses. Not every company gives it. So the annual package for a $5k salary without bonuses and 13th month is $60,000, is lower or equal to one with bonuses and 13th month with a base salary of $4615.39 (60000/13).
The above is just purely about salary. I have many friends who were paid 20+ to 50+% higher starting salary than me (normal cauz they are HD/D compared to me almost no merit) finds trouble job-hopping few years later because their work is very niche in the market, no excellent portfolio, already lost touch in technical tests. Many of them developed low self-esteem from couldn’t even secure an interview and poor career progression in their current work. A few of them even start to show signs of becoming some grumpy uncles and aunties who just find fault about everything and everyone for their circumstances except themselves. The competition doesn’t stop after your FCH, it only ends after you retire.
Genuinely hoping you will find happiness rather than fixated on winning your peers. I’m sure you are worth more than the 5k starting salary. Aim towards gaining all the specialised skillset and the numbers will soon follow, maybe many times higher than 5k. Good luck.

Thanks for the no drama post lol
Idm accepting a lower than 5. 5k is just an IDEAL case as I mentioned in my prev post. If can get higher salary why not right? I've had this belief that starting salary is important because when you change job, they base your salary on your current one, hence my concern. I genuinely like tech after my 1st internship with tech so I've done many projects and internships on my own time, hence the confidence or even arrogance if some sensitive people here think so. The only factor that I am considering now is.. where in tech and how do I as an undergrad with limited information take factors into account? Look at salary lor i guess?

Shitty local companies yes. Proper MNCs not exactly true, especially in tech.
You are valued based on what you are worth and put you into that salary band. I joined from public service to MNC and they straight-up offer me 50% more. Didn't even bother to check my last drawn pay to make that offer. They did made me submit the last drawn pay only as a matter of due diligence after the offer was accepted.

Actually that’s a good point to think about. Your starting salary will tend to affect your long term salary, even your annual increment and promotion. But just be careful if you are too fixated in the number and the budget for the position is 6k, they might just quickly offer you 5k cauz you are “cheap labour”.
In negotiation, the first person who throw the number loses. The basic in tech is to do well in technical interview, then they will just give you whatever number you desire.
There’s no point in asking for opinion, you just gotta apply and get that offer. Good luck again.
