Default SMU Scholarship vs UCL (self pay)

Hi,

I need some advise.

I am in a dilemma. I am offered a SMU full scholarship for double degree prog Biz and Econs and Masters prog. Scholarship is worth 120k.

I am offered a place by UCL and Warwick for Econs and awaiting LSE reply. I would really like to study in UK but need to self finance my overseas studies. My family is not rich but parents are willing to finance my overseas studies. However, we will need to make adjustment to our spending inorder to finance my overseas studies.

I will return to Singapore to work in the finance sector. Is the overseas studies really worth spending S$250k? Are SMU ddp scholars highly regarded in the private sector? Will overseas grads be paid much more than local grads?

Tks

Take fms even if go Ivy League university, if work in Singapore, still worse off than nus ntu smu grad, will be debt ridden and prospects = local Uni Grad. Fch nus ntu smu >= fch Ivy League.

But will be diff if u take up Govt scholarship to go overseas study. Wise choice is to take the smu scholarship.

Just my point of view here. I would say go for SMU scholarship. Unless you are sponsored for the overseas study. Actually nobody really bothers whether you are a scholar after working for many years. Dont get yourself burdened financially. I did a masters, spent over 20K and it took me a while to clear my debts. So I can't imagine if you have to pay 250K.

I was a smu scholar. Did anyone really cared about my scholarship? No.

Were my peers who went overseas better regarded than me? No, but overseas studies broadened their perspective, and they were more willing to explore alternate career paths like working for a startup or overseas.

I would say, don't worry so about about scholar label apart from the obvious financial benefits

Go SMU. $250k is a lot of money and not easy to earn back. Employers here regard NUS, NTU and SMU as highly as UCL or LSE. And perhaps more highly than Warwick. Overseas grad will not be paid any more than local grads in general.

You can always save and then go overseas for a one year Master's degree later.

Tks for all the replies. I think I will stay in SMU as overseas education of 250k is a hefty sum.

Hello, I'm also offered SMU bachelor biz and econs ddp, but I'm thinking if there are chances for me to obtain a scholarship in SMU, as the school fees are really hefty. do you mind sharing your scholarship process? (when you were called up, interview process, etc )

p.s. I also applied to UK and decided to not go as the school fees are too much for my family.

Are you a girl or guy serving NS? For girls matriculating this year, the scholarship has been award. If you are a guy then you can apply next year for the scholarship.

For LSE/UCL, maybe...

BUT you are under immense pressure to get into a FO banking job in Singapore and grind for the next 3-5 years.

Assuming you do get in with your pedigree, what if you actually find that you dislike the work? Or hate the hours? You would be stuck in a hole cursing and swearing throughout your time there.

I know of such people.. so I would caution you to be careful.

LOL read the part in bold. **** off mate, you're just a loser local Uni grad who's sore his degree can't even compare to UCL or Warwick. Any Ivy League loser with a pass degree will still be respected more than your second class upper from NUS or NTU.
