With an engineering degree, when we switch to finance sector won't be lose out to those accountancy/business students because we don't learn as much about them in terms of the ir pool of knowledge and concepts?

I am not a university student yet but I can get into Business/Accountancy in Singapore. I am torn between Engineering and bussiness/accountancy. I got a reserved place in NUS Chemical Engineering and do you think it's a wise decision to do that degree? I don't really have passion, as long as I don't do menial work and work without purpose.

if you got no passion in chemical engineering, then dont bother doing it. you wont be able to do well. maybe you can try taking the Harrison Assessment to find out more about your interests and career path.

To be honest, if you are able to get a first class/2nd upper for chemical engineering. You confirm can easily get into petrol/gas company and you will expect high pay.

How is the pay as compared to working in the finance sector? I heard engineer get paid super low and compared to those engineer. Furthermore, I've received feedbacks regarding about modules in NUS Chemical Engineering. Most people said that what they study(all those mathematical equations, complex scientific concepts) is actually not used in real life. I would have no interest studying something that has no meaning. I would rather study accountancy/business where what we study can be directly applied.

Kinda wrong. What you studied in Accountancy/Biz is the current trend. When you graduate, you would apply <30% of what you learnt. Its more of communication skills you need here.

As for chem engineering, yes everything is unrelated. Only <20%? you learnt is applied in your job.

In fact, all engineering stuff people learn are going to obsolete in around 5years time because of the fast changing of technology.

However, what matters is securing your honors. No point telling me you rather get to biz when you get normal pass in biz whereas you can get first class in chem engine. Unless you are confident you can score dam well for both. I would ask you to go Biz.

Sad to say, we live in a meritocracy world. Grades are important no matter where you go. After that it's followed by your performance.

-Peace.

I can't tell how is the pay because I have no idea. But everyone knows that petrol/gas company like shell & exxonmobie = golden rice bowl.

Yes, engineer pay are low like you will get a roughly $3k+ for your starting pay BUT that will depends on your honors.

Trust me, Chemical engineering is not easy and its not meaningless. Your Interest and Passion is more important than someone telling you which sector pay you better.

and the guy above made his point. Be flexible. you wont be able to apply everything you learn in University to your job. University is just a stepping stone towards working life. It trains you to be mentally prepared. How to handle stress, how to work as a team and many more.

I can tell you LOCAL UNI = HELL! unless you are those super smart ppl then good for you.

if you are confident you can score damm well for both. go for Biz then.

Rmb : Your result will determine your starting career while your performance will bring you further in a long run. Choose wisely.

in addition, From NUS website, Chemical engineering take in 282 students.

while Business Admin (Accountancy) take in 220 student.

You need to be in top few % to be able to obtain an A/B+ to maintain a first class or 2nd upper honor.

Both courses are comparable. Chemical Eng take in student with AAA/B & GPA of 3.92 while Business take in JC student with AAA/A & GPA of 3.86.

I can said that all students who managed to get in these 2 courses are all top students and super smart. Together with FTs. You can expect strong competitions.

getting a good result will depends on your hardwork and determination. all the best! Unless you can go oversea uni which you 100% guarantee + chop will get a first class honor in BIZ . if not good luck!

I got straight As for A Levels, and I was originally offered Double Degree Engineering and Business but rejected the offer and chose chem eng instead. I may have regretted the decision. I am interested in both chemical engineering and bba(accountancy), but however I am not sure whether I can get a good honours when I study accountancy, because the nature of business education, sometimes its hard to control your grades as compared to science degree like chem eng. For chem eng, at least I can start 2 years early by reading on my own(as now im still in ns), which I stand a higher chance of getting good honours. But of course, I'll never know how tough my competitors can be...

For chemical engineer, do they usually work in office or outside the working site(like patrolling around the power plants etc).

Anyway, thanks for the insightful reply(I wished I discovered this forum earlier lol).

DAMN! you are actually an elite! Dont be humble! TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE! Go for it!!

since you are so smart, dont waste it! dont settle for a normal chemical engineering when you can take up an double degree. I cant even smell it! lol.

Go to this website BrightSparks - Singapore's Scholarship, Higher Education and Career Portal, LOTS OF SCHOLARSHIP WITH TOP COMPANIES!! With your results, you confirm can get into top UK university and 1st class wont be an issue to you. JC student sure got good communication skill, scholarship interview confirm pass!!

you still got time to explore your options!!

well, i;m still studying at NTU EEE! so I can tell how university life is about. you will be able to meet different type of human being like backstabbers, leechers but there are still good people around.

That's the main problem. For chem engine, if you can mug, you can get good results. For biz, u have to rely on ur project mates and luck on answering the qsn. With the same amount of effort u have put in, scoring a perfect score for biz is impossible compared to chem engine despite the diffculty for chem engine.

Your thoughts of chem eng vs accountancy. TS is thinking about EEE vs accountancy.

Your chem eng prospect vs EEE prospect is totally on different level.

If I were you, I would choose something I like. This is because both of your choice are good although chemical engineering is an engineering course. Doing well is the next best option I would choose if I were you.

However, if I were the TS, i would choose Accountancy for the prospects. However, I worry for TS because TS came from electronics background where he might be better off doing EEE and get first class honours. It would be bad for him to score badly for accountancy.

Money is important. But getting good grades is even more important. Imagine you got a merit for accountancy degree. The employer might just skip your resume and proceed with the next one although its a good course.

How are you going to show your true potential when you can't even land yourself a job?

If you already haven’t a course of study in mind, there’s a theory that you won’t go far wrong choosing a subject you excel or enjoy. The line of reasoning is you’ll probably obtain better grades than if you chose a course leading to a lucrative degree but ended up towards the bottom of the class. I would suggest TS to choose EEE as from what he said he can do well for it. As for Fugu, I would suggest you doing something you like.
