Not backoffice. Think you are just referring to a small group of Invest bankers. There are many other front office positions in a the bank. Also, doctors don't earn that low. 30-40% is a reasonable estimate.

Default Archiect with MBA 5.5 years of exp. in India

Hi, I'm an architect & have done MBA in real estate in India. I have around 5.5 years of experience in India. How much should be my salary in a construction comp. in Singapore? I dont have any idea about how much salary should i ask for while appearing for an interview for a job in Singapore.
Please reply..

Unfair or not, employers know how to squeeze the most out of their workers. Bosses pocket the profits, while staff gets hell. This is definitely the norm today. So if I am getting paid pittance compared to what is available out there, then I better focus on getting my work-life balance right.

And yes, I admit to selling out by asking for lower pay. Perhaps should move on to a bigger firm that pays better. A $1k increment possible?

Hi all,

Had been considering trying new experience in Singapore as I heard salary offer is quite good etc.
I have 12 yrs local exp in Australia and a register architect here.
Would companies be interested in hiring overseas skill and how much salary should I be expecting.
Need your input to see if its worth the change.
Thanks in advance...

When you have a brain tumour from too much number crunching, consider how much of your amassed fortune you'd be willing to pay the surgeon.

Default Architect's Pay.

To Sooty's advice of collective bargaining: I think it'll be very tough. Imagine a bunch of factory workers forming a union to demand higher pay. I'd tell you they'll lose their jobs because the business will simply hire cheaper and better qualified replacements. Yes, factory workers, that's what architects have become. We slog to produce, while someone down the chain (who isn't necessarily an architect) sells the idea and gets the moolah. We get peanuts.

There are those amongst us who choose to believe that this is a creative career and put creative pursuits above all else. To these folks, I applaud you. But our bosses (mostly the firm owners) have already recognised that it's all about $$$$. I'm sure those are are reading from this forum are concerned about $$$$.

I used to wake up everyday in awe that I'm an architect. Knowing that I've do well enough in school to attain my papers. Believing that my designs can change the world. Very swell-headed. But I've changed my direction because this profession just doesn't pay well enough to justify the value of my life I've sacrificed. If I include all the nonsensical OT I've done, I'm sure I' paid less per hour than the food court cleaners.

I've got a family to feed too, but I'm ready to take a plunge for a career change. Better to yank out the band-aid now than to bleed myself to death slowly.

Anyone wanna hire me?

Guys,

There are architects, and then there are ARCHITECTS. Unlike doctors who continue to invest in their life long education, and become specialist brain surgeons; I've found that Architects are not doing enough for themselves to differentiate themselves, the individual from the pack.

The most successful ones are always known by NAME.

Just getting your QP certification is not enough, there are thousands of QPs out there. Sounds in this forum like you've all forgotten that the Architect's Personal Portfolio of Work is key to his getting good money or not.

As you get along in years, you'll realise that an Architect of XX years working in, or even owning the small firm doing houses and the odd condo, is not the same as an Architect of XX years working in a large corporation working on some of the most prestigious, and complex projects in the world.

These are both still potential routes to good money, but also possible routes to mediocrity, its what you do with it that counts. And at some point in the Architects career, there will be a point where he has to decide which way to go.

T
I bet the former (owning small firm, doing houses and odd condo) makes much more $$$ than the deluded ARCHITECT working in a large firm, on prestigious projects.

This differentiation is important to me because this site in salary.sg, not reputation.sg
And reputation does not equate to $$$.

Default Dont give up

A friend of mine told me something profound. It seemed so obvious but then again the things that are obvious are not always in black and white. He told me one needs to know only two things when it comes to career: 1- Are you good at it and 2- Do you enjoy it. It is that simple. But I will add a third component-- 3- Do you have a passion for it. That third piece is very important-- it is the one that will ultimately make it or break it for anyone. It is your passion that will drive you to not settle for regular career growth-- it is your passion that will lead you to think outside the box and then you might find yourself not necessarily doing traditional architecture only but designing outer space structures or specialize in stage designs or movie set designs inspired and supported by architecture--it is that passion that will bring excitement and money-- and then it is that passion that will give you courage to learn and go through the pains and challenges of the early years, the intern years, frankly years upon possible years (as in my case) aiming to get a grip on technical hang-ups until you can finally use your technical knowledge to finally do design/art driven design work. While that third piece, passion, is very important-- you should at least have the first two in line-- 1-are you good at it and 2- do you enjoy it.

Everyone knows this already, bro.

The question that beats all is "can you make a good living doing what you like".
