I would disagree, I think A&G still has some very profitable departments with long term clients (namely SG government linked companies).

It's also inconceivable that MC would match or undercut A&G, given their salaries / overheads are much higher. A&G maintains its profitability by combining high deal value / volume from SG government linked companies, with low paid and high billing associates.

What about other B4 leh? The squeeze is real, especially with international firms coming in.

Frankly speaking Singapore's financial and services sector is simply not big enough to support a large amount of corporate lawyers or big players in the market. In terms of volume of work and fees.

As compared to more mature jurisdictions, there's also not yet a culture of corporate management seeking external legal advice pre-emptively for corporate and regulatory issues, especially in companies with less established process and governance. Management always tries to DIY and call lawyers in only when sh_t hits the fan. Hence further reducing the types of work.

Which explains why local law firms' profitability is so low and associates are so poorly paid.

I think the future of the legal sector here is for a substantial no. of midtier firms to be absorbed or fold & at least 1 B4 will merge with an international player in the next 5 years.

D&N has already wound down its corp dept to a skeletal team. The same fate awaits the rest of the b4.

What do u mean skeletal team

D&N is still Tier 3 in Legal 500 corp M&A and Chambers leh. And tier 2 in IFLR1000

Peer firms are Shook Lin, Rodyk, TSMP for corp

Don't anyhow slander D&N corp. You got some bone to pick with them ah

Those are all paid for. The rankings favour bigger firms becusse the big firms pay alot of marketing fees to these “guides” so its not surprising they are ranked up there but their corp team is smaller than other mid size firms.

After reading the Leon Tay Quan Li judgment, it's clear the dude didn't train as a litigator. Anyone knows which firm he trained at?

He clearly doesn't have the necessary sense of self preservation and danger instincts to be a litigator. He should have engaged counsel the moment he was asked to be hauled before the SILE dean lol.

Creating PDFs only on the day of the meeting with the Dean. Taking less than 1 day to write his written representations - probably didn't even think it through.

Must be an aspiring corp lawyer hahaha. Whole day blundering right into bear traps.

I am ending TC doing corp but I find it rather boring. Filling up forms and reviewing contracts which a law school kid can do as well?

should I apply to do litigation? my dream is attend court and argue. seems much more interesting.

Do it lor. Just be aware that corp gives you exit options that liti doesn't. If you do liti, you are setting your career up to do only liti in future. If you do corp, you are setting your career up for many more potential roles.

I;m not saying you cant move inhouse as a litigator (many hv done that), just that a corp lawyer moving inhouse is a much more natural fit & hence much easier and much wider range of exit options.
