Hey seniors I'm in NS now. Wondering whether smu or nus law is better. Right now has a nus place reserved.

My parents would like to incorporate a company and list me as a director/secretary. Any seasoned practitioners care to comment if this is a good idea for me? I am a junior assoc and my biggest concern is that this will affect my career if I make a lateral move, esp since I am in Equity Capital Markets.

Can ask your parents if it is possible to put you as managing partner instead? Sounds better than a director.

It’s a very bad idea. You’ll need to declare your directorships every year and as and when you join a new firm. Getting implicated in accidental regulatory breaches of the company could also affect your PC renewal, and it’s no defence to argue that you were a passive director. You could face career consequences and inconveniences which are disproportionate in comparison to any convenience your parents may gain in listing you as a corporate officer.

Tell your parents to find someone else.

You should be reading through the threads to find the answer to your question. If you don't like doing research I have some bad news for you...

In any case, I don't mean to step on anyone's toes, but NUS law, no question. SMU law grads are typically (the operative word being "typically") seen as all talk and little substance, according to a number of practitioners I've candidly spoken to over the years. It does not help that the hiring partners in my practice group appear to share this view.

Hang onto that offer, though be warned; I've been told that the culture at NUS law is rather toxic (good preparation for the cesspool of toxicity that is the legal profession, perhaps?)

I'm in MC. And yes, I'm not from a local university. But that doesn't give me a reason to put others down. For what it's worth NUS grads are some of the most technically sound people I know. But I'm sure you'll find a way to make a corrosive remark about this too
